Population
The compact area of the US state of Maryland is home to 5.8 million people, 19th in the country. The population density is 230 people per square kilometer.
The state capital, Annapolis, has a population of only 44,000, while the largest population center is B altimore, with a population of 620,000.
The region is predominantly white - more than 58%. At the same time, the white race is represented inmajority of non-Hispanic residents.
The largest ethnic group is the Germans (15.7%), the second is the Irish (11.7%) and the third is the British (9%).
By religion, the majority of the population is represented by Christians (80%) - these are Baptists, Protestants, Catholics, Jews and others.

Free state or a bit of history

The state flourished in the first half of the 19th century, when industrial enterprises opened and trade intensified. In 1811, the construction of the National Road began, and in 1829 the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal was opened, connecting the state with Philadelphia.
In 1839, the country's first passenger railway line was already starting to operate.
With the coming to power of Lincoln, there were very few people in the state for the abolition of slavery. The state experienced many conflicts during the Civil War, including the B altimore Riot. However, the district authorities still vote against secession from the Union. With the end of the war, the state's economy is recovering rapidly.
