The United Nations is one of the most influential organizations in the world. Its structure includes several organs, the purpose of each of which is necessary to know in order to understand its work. First of all, you should understand what the General Assembly is, which can be called the main division of the UN.

What is this organ?

The UN General Assembly is a unit that has existed since 1945 and is responsible for deliberative, representative and policy-making functions. It is attended by one hundred and ninety-three members from around the world who work to discuss issues reflected in the Charter of the institution. Each year from September to December, the UN Assembly meets for a new session, opening other deliberations as needed during the remaining months.

Functions of Organ

The scope of the Assembly is determined by the UN Charter.

According to him, this body is distinguished by such powers as considering the rules of cooperation for maintaining peace and security and resolving disputes related to these issues, organizing research and making recommendations for the development of international law andrespect for human freedoms, as well as providing conditions for exchange in the social, cultural, educational, humanitarian and economic fields. And that's not all. The International Assembly also develops measures to resolve conflict situations, considers reports from other UN bodies and approves the budget of the entire organization.

Ways to save the world

The Assembly is the body responsible for the security of the entire planet. One of the first resolutions called "Unity for Peace", adopted on November 3, 1950, decided that it was this organization that could determine the threat or act of aggression.

When a problem arises, Assembly members decide on collective measures to restore security during specially organized sessions. However, the intervention cannot be direct - it is only a warning to the states provoking the conflict, and in extreme cases, a set of indirect measures of a political, social, legal and economic nature. In 2000, the so-called Millennium Declaration was adopted, which guides the Assembly. This is a document that testifies to the UN's commitment to building security, disarmament, eradicating poverty, protecting the environment and solving the problems of Africa, which all mankind should strive for.

Organization structure

The Assembly is a complex body that includes several different divisions. The organization has six main committees. Their activity begins after the completionsubstantive meetings, which deal with the main items on the agenda. Many issues remain outside this important list and are de alt with by units. The distribution of tasks takes place directly at the meeting of the Assembly. They can be sent to the committee dealing with disarmament and international security, which is considered the first. The second is the department of economic and financial issues. The Humanitarian, Social and Cultural Committee is the third, and the fourth is working on decolonization and other political issues.

There is also a department for dealing with administrative and budgetary matters, and the sixth committee is international legal. If the situation suddenly becomes too acute, the Assembly will again deal with it, even if the item was previously sent to another unit.

Special meetings

The Assembly of Peoples United by the UN can have not only regular, but also special sessions - related to special and emergency issues. This happens quite rarely and is always accompanied by important historical processes. In all the years that the Assembly has existed, this has happened 28 times. The reasons for special meetings are such issues as the aggravated situation in the Middle East, the problems of Namibia, the financial problems of the UN, apartheid, drugs, attitudes towards women, environmental pollution, the spread of AIDS and HIV. The solemn event may also be in the spotlight - the last session, whichtook place on January 24, 2005, was associated with the sixtieth anniversary of the demise of the Nazi concentration camps. In some cases, the meeting turns out to be fruitless - the work of the Assembly did not lead to improvements in the situation in 1958 and 1967, when conflicts in the Middle East escalated, in 1956, when political difficulties affected Hungary, in the case of the Afghan conflict in 1980, and also in many cases of consideration of actions Israel and Palestine in the occupied territories of the Gaza Strip.
