Youth Square in Zelenograd: history and facts

One of the first squares in the city of Zelenograd appeared back in 1972. Its name, as well as the street adjacent to it, was due to the fact that the inhabitants of the city were mostly young, full of strength people. Zelenograd was conceived as a satellite city and was directly connected with youth. At the time the main square appeared here, he himself was not yet twenty years old. There were always a lot of people in this cozy place. On Yunosti Square in Zelenograd, friends met in large groups, couples in love cooed, young mothers walked with strollers. And the restless kids rode bicycles. Folk festivals were also held here and public holidays were celebrated.

The history of the emergence of Youth Square in Zelenograd

According to the idea of I. Pokrovsky, the area was covered with hexagonal aviation plates. They harmoniously combined with the mosaic in the pool bowl and with the mosaic pattern on the wall of the adjacent shopping complex. The cinema "Electron", light in architecture, immediately settled down. It was built in 1966 and was one of themost visited at that time in Moscow. Along the perimeter, Youth Square in Zelenograd was surrounded by a cobblestone parapet. These stones are remembered by more than one generation of young people, schoolchildren, students who loved to walk on them so much.

Pool or fountain?

But the main attraction of Youth Square in Zelenograd is still a fountain. It was covered inside with glass pebbles and was conceived as a mosaic pool. It was conceived in the form of an inclined bowl, inside of which a pipe was laid. Due to this, the bright mosaic pattern was washed by water and shimmered in the sun with all the colors of the rainbow.

But after a while it turned out that the design was impractical. The pool quickly became clogged, the pipes clogged. The water supplied in this way evaporated much faster than planned. Therefore, the city authorities decided to make a fountain out of the pool.

Reconstruction of the fountain

Already at the end of the 70s, water jets rose from the center of the bowl and the fountain became a favorite resting place for Zelenograd residents. He was especially happy with the kids. They screeched along the edge of the former pool, catching up with the iridescent spray and the wind that brought them. During another reconstruction in the late 90s, the fountain received a "kremanka". But the mosaic pattern was rarely seen, the bowl was always filled with water.

In 2017, the fountain on Youth Square in Zelenograd was dismantled and it itself was seriously rebuilt. The old bowl, like the plates, was removed,disassembled the cobblestone parapet.

And in just a few months, the favorite vacation spot of Zelenograd residents has changed. The area has become comfortable, new benches have appeared, the paths are laid with modern paving slabs.

And the fountain? He stayed. Instead of an asymmetric bowl, a flat fountain appeared. Its jets hit from the ground and can change their direction thanks to the music. At night, the pedestrian fountain is illuminated with colorful lights.
