On a VAZ-2109 car, the replacement of the rear struts is necessary in case of excessive wear or damage. If we compare the suspension of the "nine" with the "classic", then it is more perfect, the efficiency is higher, and the design is a little simpler. Although there are still common features - the design has springs and shock absorbers.

Only on the "nines" they are assembled into a single unit, and on the "classic" they are installed independently of each other. Repair and maintenance of the suspension on a VAZ-2109 car can be done independently, you just need to know the general design of the car and be able to use the tool.

Rear suspension design

The basis of the whole structure is a suspension strut, which dampens body vibrations when driving on uneven surfaces. The rear pillars of the VAZ-2109 are being replaced without dismantling other vehicle suspension components. Rear suspension strut consists of:

• shock absorber;
• metalplates under the spring;
• springs;
• rubber pads;
• fastening elements - nuts and bolts.

All these elements are connected into a single unit and installed on two sides of the car. It turns out that the design dampens the vibrations that the entire rear of the car produces when driving on rough roads.

What is a shock absorber made of?

In addition, the shock absorber itself includes many smaller elements. The basis is a system similar to a hand pump with something. Only oil pumps instead of air. Some shock absorbers can be repaired - it is enough to completely disassemble them and replace all components that have become unusable. You will also need to fill in oil, and exactly as much as indicated in the technical specifications for a particular model.

To independently check the he alth of the shock absorber, just lower the body as low as possible. At the same time, its stock should enter as much as possible. After that, abruptly the body is released. With a working shock absorber, the body will make 1-3 oscillations, after which it will stop. But if the device is faulty, then the body will fluctuate much longer. The reason for this behavior, most likely, is that oil has completely leaked out of the housing or the sealing rubber rings have been destroyed.

Which tool is needed to replace the uprights?

When replacing the silent block of the VAZ-2109 rear pillar, it is advisable to install the car on a viewing hole or overpass. In this situation, the repair takes place muchfaster because there are more amenities. To make repairs yourself, you will need:

1. Jack - preferably hydraulic.
2. Body supports.
3. Choosing shoes - installed under the front wheels.
4. Set of keys.
5. Spring puller.
6. Steel wire.

Wire may be required to keep the spring compressed. But you can use thick copper or aluminum instead of steel. Only these metals are much softer and, under the action of the elastic force, the springs can stretch.

Preparatory work

Before starting work on replacing the rubber bands on the rear pillars of the VAZ-2109 or dismantling the elements, you must thoroughly prepare. To do this, before starting the repair, in advance, treat all threaded connections with a penetrating lubricant such as WD-40. Grease should be on the metal for at least half an hour to completely clean the threads from rust and dirt.

There are only two attachment points at the rear pillar of the nine - the top one inside the trunk and the bottom one on the beam. To remove the shock absorber, unscrew the nuts and bolts. But before that, it is imperative to compress the spring as much as possible and fix its position with steel wire or some kind of rigid brackets. The main thing is not to let the spring open during the repair process.

How to remove the rear rack on the "nine"?

To dismantle the rear rack on the VAZ-2109, you will need to perform severalsimple steps:

1. Loosen the wheel bolts on the side being repaired.
2. Jack up the back of the car.
3. Remove the wheel completely.
4. Install a support under the body and lower the car onto it.
5. Check how well the spring is compressed with a puller.
6. Open the trunk, remove the rubber plug covering the shock absorber rod attachment point.
7. Use a 17mm long tubular wrench or a special tool to unscrew the nut from the stem.
8. Unscrew the lower suspension strut mount.
9. Pull out the entire strut assembly.

Repair or change?

Before some motorists, a quite reasonable question arises - why not try to restore the old racks on your own, because the cost of new ones is quite high? The cheapest of unknown production and quality will cost at least 1,500 rubles apiece. If you decide to repair them yourself, then it will come out at least three times cheaper. But there are several pitfalls:

1. If the resource of the old racks is already decent, then there may be a strong wear on the stem, due to which it is sometimes impossible to achieve perfect sealing.
2. It is unlikely that you will be able to pour as much oil into the shock absorber as is necessary for proper operation. If you make a mistake by a couple of grams down, the shock absorber will notwill work. If you pour more than the norm, the seals will break.

And the quality of items in repair kits often leaves much to be desired. Therefore, it will be much more effective to replace the rack assembly. Their resource will be much higher than that of the restored ones.

Assembly of the rear rack "nine"

And now a few words about how to properly replace the rear pillars of the VAZ-2109. Many motorists change only the shock absorber and pillows, do not attach much importance to the springs. And it is worth paying attention to them. As they wear, they sag, and the length of all turns becomes less than necessary. As a result, the entire suspension will not work properly.

When assembling, follow these rules:

1. Install the compressed spring on the strut.
2. Fix the rubber pads on the last coil of the spring with electrical tape.
3. Carefully, being careful not to move the spring relative to the shock absorber, reinstall the strut.
4. Fit the nut on top of the damper rod.
5. Install the bottom of the upright onto the beam. Secure with a bolt.

Tighten all threaded connections after assembly and remove the puller from the spring. After that, you can put the wheel in place and start repairing the second side - it is done in the same way. It is advisable after repair to make the final tightening of the nuts after you install the car onwheels. And after 20-30 kilometers, check the tightening of all connections - sometimes the nuts are unscrewed after driving. Try to use nuts with plastic locks on the threads.
