Zaporozhye is a city in the south of Ukraine, which is the center of the administrative region of the same name. Until 1921 it was called Aleksandrovsk. With the advent of Soviet power, the city was renamed. The population of Zaporozhye, as of October 1, 2016, is 752,472 people. According to this indicator, the city is the sixth in Ukraine. Zaporozhye is located on the largest river in the country, the Dnieper. City Day is celebrated on October 14.

Zaporozhye: population

The city is believed to have been founded in 952. This is the native land of the Cossacks. However, people have lived here since the Middle Paleolithic, which was facilitated by a favorable climate and convenient geographical position.

It is impossible to say exactly what the population of Zaporozhye was like during this period. However, there are official statistics for 1781. During this period, the population of Zaporozhye was only 300 people. Within 14 years, it has quadrupled. In 1795, the population of Zaporozhye was 1200 people. The next round of growth came between 1910 and 1913. Then the population grew from 38 thousand to 63.6. In 1917, the number of people living in Zaporozhye decreased by almost 15,000. In 1917, the population of the city was 58.5 thousand. Virtually nothing has changed in the next ten years. By the end of the 1930s, the population of the city was 289.2 thousand people. This is four times more than 13 years ago.

During the first two years of the Great Patriotic War, the population of Zaporozhye decreased by almost three times. However, already in 1956 it amounted to 381 thousand people, which is 1.3 times more than in 1939. Until 1992, the population continued to grow. During this period, it reached its peak. In 1992, 897.6 thousand people lived in the city.

After the collapse of the USSR, the population began to gradually decrease. In 2001, 815.3 thousand people lived in the city, and in 2013 - 770.7 thousand. The main regional population of statistics made the last population assessment on October 1, 2016. Now 752472 people live in the city. Moreover, the area of Zaporozhye is 331 square kilometers. By districts

Zaporozhye is divided into several administrative units. The city consists of seven districts. Considering the question of how many people are in Zaporozhye, it is necessary to consider exactly where the most people live.

As of August 1, 2014, the largest district of the city is Shevchenkovsky. One fifth of the population lives here. This area was isolated in 1970. Then 133 thousand people lived here. At that time, Ordzhonikidzevsky (now Voznesensky) was the most densely populated area.

The second largest is now the Dnieper (formerly Leninsky). 18% of the city's population lives here. This is 137170 people.

It should be noted that originally Zaporozhye was divided into three districts: Oktyabrsky, Leninsky and Ordzhonikidzevsky. In 1959, it was the first one that was the most densely populated. Now he is in last place. In 1970, two more districts were allocated - Zavodskoy and Shevchenkovsky. During this period, most people lived in Ordzhonikidzevsky. In 1979, another district was added - Kommunarsky. By this time, Ordzhonikidzevsky had already lost the palm in terms of the number of residents to Leninsky.

National composition

According to the 2001 census, the following groups can be distinguished:

• Ukrainians. They make up the largest part of the population. This is 70.3% of the total or 573 thousand people.
• Russians. They make up about a quarter of the population. This is about 207 thousand people.
• Other. Belarusians make up 0.7% of the total population of Zaporozhye, Bulgarians - 0.4%, Jews - 0.4%, Georgians - 0.4%, Armenians - 0.4%, Tatars - 0.3%, Azerbaijanis - 0, 2%, Gypsies - 0.1%, Poles - 0.1%, Germans - 0.1%, Moldovans - 0.1%, Greeks - 0.1%.

If we consider the dynamics, the Ukrainians have always been the largest group in the city. In 1926, 47.5% of the Cossacks identified themselves with it.

Language groups

Most Cossacks speak Russian. According to the 2001 census, 56.8% of the population consider this language to be their mother tongue. However, almost half of the population speaks Ukrainian.

If we consider the historical dynamics, then a sharp increase in the use of Russian occurred after the Bolsheviks came to power. In 1897, only 24.8% spoke it. The increase in the number of Russian speakers was not due to a decrease in the share of Ukrainian speakers, but due to a reduction in the use of Jewish. In 2001, a negligible number of people listed him inas native.

It should be noted that the smallest number of Ukrainian speakers was recorded in 1926 - only 33.8%.

By age

The population of the city of Zaporozhye is getting older. If in 1995 the number of people under the age of 17 was 498.9 thousand people, then in 2016 it was only 293 thousand. But the number of pensioners is growing. In 1995, 363.4 thousand were in the age group of 60 years and older, now it is 411.2.

Birth rate

In 2016, 16579 children were born. Only 28.4% of them were born in a registered marriage. The number of deaths in 2016 is 28,066 people. Thus, the natural increase is negative. 797 people moved from Zaporozhye in 2016.

In 2016, there were 13,081 marriages and 6,574 registered divorces. The number of children who died before the age of one was 132: 79 boys and 53 girls.

Life expectancy at birth in Zaporozhye is 66 years for men and 76 for women. In 1995, this figure for both sexes was 66 years.
