What is a parapet?
Brustwehr means "chest" and "protection" in German. The parapet is an element of a fortification in the form of an embankment. The purpose is to cover the fighter from enemy observation, protect from shells and bullets, and also provide convenience during firing. Parapets are used in the formation of combat positions. If a soldier, preparing to repel an enemy assault, strengthenson the ground, then this element of the fortification will become an additional obstacle.
About device
The inner side of the parapet became a place for a barbette, the outer side became a place for a berm. A barbet is a special bulk platform on which an artillery piece is installed. A berm is a bulk ledge outside the parapet. Unlike the embrasure, this element provides the fighter with the best angles for aiming the gun, but less protection from bullets. However, with the use of a berm, it will not be so easy for an attacker to get on the parapet of the trench. At the same time, the presence of a berm has a positive effect on the speed of the construction of fortifications: workers erecting a parapet can stand on it. During the battle, when shells and bullets hit the outer slope, the ground is held by the berm and does not slide into the ditch.
What are fortifications made of?
Iron can be used as a material in the manufacture. Such a parapet is called armored. Instead of an earthen rampart, the tools are covered with a thick metal wall, which is represented by individual segments fastened to each other by means of bolts and wedges. Also, for the construction of parapets, natural stone, wood and other improvised building materials are used. According to experts, the military mainly uses ordinary land for this purpose. This choice is due to the fact that this material is cheap and always at hand. In addition, if a projectile hits an earthen parapet, fragments will not form. The opposite effect exists inwooden and stone fortifications.
