But on May 13, 1987, Mathias Rust's plane left the runway in Uetersen, which is located near Hamburg, and headed for Iceland. On the morning before the decisive flight, the pilot filled up the full tanks of his Cessna and sent the flight plan to Stockholm to the controllers.
