The southern administrative district of Moscow is one of the 12 districts of the city and consists of 16 districts. This is the largest district among the urban districts of the capital in terms of the number of inhabitants. The population is 1,777,000 people (as of 2017). Along with the central district, the South Administrative District does not go beyond the Moscow Ring Road. The code number of the Southern District according to the OKATO system is 45 296 000 000.

The head of the Southern District is Prefect A. V. Chelyshev. He took up this post on November 8, 2013. Prior to that, he was a prefect in the Novomoskovsky and Troitsky districts of the city of Moscow. His deputy is Martyanova Larisa Aleksandrovna.

Before Chelyshev, the prefect of this district was Smoleevsky Georgy Viktorovich. But he was removed from his post after the pogroms that took place in the district in October 2013

For the purpose of landscaping, parks, forest park zones, boulevards, squares, protected areas along rivers and other forms of landscaping are being created. The total number of natural reservoirs is 72, including 50 ponds. In total, this is 24 percent of the total area of all water bodies in the capital.

193 natural objects have a protected status. The largest of them is the Tsaritsyno park, the area of which exceeds 100 hectares. Some of them also have the status of cultural heritage sites.

In the Southern District, 16 district newspapers and one district newspaper with the name "Southern Horizons" have been created. In particular, they cover the activities of local authorities. There is also a district cable studiotelevision. Television broadcasting is controlled by the Ekran-5 TV company.

The area also has its own attractions, such as the Donskoy Monastery, the Simonov Monastery and the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve. Natural objects can also be considered a kind of sights of the district.
