History

Even in pre-Petrine times, part of the Primorsky district was the water surface of Lake Dolgoe. Peter I began to issue these lands for use to the commandants of the Peter and Paul Fortress, hence the name of the area. At first it was the Commandant's dachas, then the Commandant's field. But this place was not popular. Back in the 19th century, the territory consisted of vegetable gardens and fields.

Everything changed at the beginning of the 20th century, when the All-Russian Aero Club rented land from the commandant of the Peter and Paul Fortress for 13 thousand rubles a year, and the field becameconduct test flights. Public attention was drawn to the area in 1910 when aviation week was held here.

It was from here, from the future Komendantskaya Square, that unique for that time innovative flights were made - to Gatchina without landing, to Moscow, the first postal flight. Utochkin and Gakkel rose into the sky from here, Matsievich died here.

During the Great Patriotic War, the airfield was used for landing transport aircraft. Flights were made until 1963, when the airfield was closed.

The huge territory immediately took on an abandoned look, where abandoned warehouses, hangars, outbuildings were interspersed with swamps and wastelands.

Development of the district

Active development and development of the Primorsky district and its part - the Commandant airfield - began in the 70s of the XX century, when it was necessary to quickly resettle St. Petersburg communal apartments in a short time. The architecture of the area is solved in a single style, the house-ships were not decorated with anything. There was only one skyscraper - the 70-story building of the Lengydroproekt.

But the highways that appeared retained their connection to the terrain, reflecting the history of the development of aeronautics. The district has Parashutnaya and Aerodromnaya streets, Testers and Lev Matsiyevich squares.

Several streets, including Ilyushin, Utochkin, Gakkelevskaya, and two avenues - Testers and Komendantsky - formed an island among the houses, in April 1988 it was called Komendantskaya Square. So the area appeared on city maps.

The inconvenient location of the square created a lot of difficulties for motorists and pedestrians.

This continued until 2005, when the Komendantsky Prospekt metro station was opened, and the construction of the shopping center began to boil.

Komendantskaya Square in St. Petersburg acquired its current appearance in 2009, when a round building of the Atmosfera shopping and entertainment center was erected in the center with an underground entrance to the metro and a passage through Komendantsky Prospekt. The architects D. and B. Sedakov worked on the creation of the shopping and entertainment center "Atmosfera", now the center is the property of HC "Adamant".
