Zhdanovskaya embankment reflects the history of the city, like any other street or courtyard in St. Petersburg. In the 18th century, the construction of the embankment was dictated by military needs. In the XVIII century, the owner of the territory of houses from the eleventh to the fifteenth was B. H. Minich.
The first houses on Zhdanovskaya embankment appeared during the life of Peter I. At that time, the section of the modern embankment was part of Nikolskaya Street. In 1738, it became known as the Engineering Embankment, since 1733 the Engineering School was located here.
Historical background
I. M. Golenishchev-Kutuzov worked as a teacher at the Engineering School. The future commander M. I. Kutuzov studied and taught within the same walls. Since 1753, the school was headed by A. P. Gannibal - a talented engineer, Pushkin's great-grandfather.
In subsequent years, the embankment was called differently. Despite the fact that in 1792 it officially became known as the Zhdanovka River Embankment, until 1817 the people adopted the name Korpusnaya Embankment.
In the XIX-XX centuries. tenement houses were built here. The architecture of the new buildings was notable for its novelty. House number 9 of merchant A. E Meisner is a prime example of Art Nouveau.
Active development began at the end of the 19th century. The number of houses that housed grocers and workers from nearby factories increased.
In 1969, the section of the road from Bolshoy Prospekt to Zhdanovskaya Street was officially named Zhdanovskaya Embankment.
Famous people
At different times, famous people lived on the embankment, not far from Bolshoy Prospekt - writers, composers, scientists.
In the 20s of the last century, the famous artist of that time V. P. Belkin lived in house number 3. A. N. Tolstoy settled in the same house after returning from emigration. The apartment had five rooms, and Tolstoy lived in it from 1923 to 1928. Well-known works were written here: the novel The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin, the stories White Night, The Cohabitant, and others.
Mikhail Bulgakov and Anna Akhmatova, Igor Ilyinsky, Rina Zelenaya, as well as other famous writers, actors and artists visited Tolstoy.
House No. 11, erected in 1950, is interesting in that there is a four-story building 11G in the courtyard, in which the engineer Los from the novel "Aelita" by A. N. Tolstoy lived. The work also describes the "cosmodrome" - a launch pad in a wasteland. There is also a real prototype of the hero - Yu. D. Los, aviator, future rocket engine designer.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the area turned into an industrial one due to the abundance of factories and manufactories. It was unattractive for recreation and walks.
Industrial waste dumped into the river. Because of this, the water in the river was so polluted thatthe housewives even refused to rinse their clothes in it.
In the 1920s, the district began to be ennobled and became a center of cultural recreation for citizens in connection with the construction of a stadium on Petrovsky Island.
Sports arenas
The Petrovsky Sports Complex is located in the Zhdanovskaya embankment area of St. Petersburg on Petrovsky Island. The stadium was built in 1925. It was destroyed during the blockade. Rebuilt in the late 50s.
Nearby, on the water, is the hotel and hostel Aqua Hostel, where you can stay at any time for any number of days. Hostel services differ from hotel services in that in this case only a bed is rented, and everything else - a room, a toilet, a shower room and a kitchen - are shared. The establishment operates around the clock. Hostel address: St. Petersburg, Zhdanovskaya embankment, 2g.
Hockey Sports Palace
Between Zhdanovskaya street and the embankment is the Hockey Sports Palace. The palace was built in 1989 to host home matches of the domestic championship and other sporting events. This small indoor skating rink on Zhdanovskaya Embankment is a favorite place for active recreation of the townspeople. On weekends, the stadium is open for skiing at night from 23:30 to 6:00. There are also day skiing on weekdays from 16:00 to 18:00.
Skating to music under the guidance of professional DJs is often held here, games and competitions are organized. Often played outhockey tickets. They like to come here with whole companies.
The quality of the ice here is excellent, filling is carried out every hour and a half. Combined with low prices, this is very good. Recently, there have been so many people who want to skate that it is not always possible to get on the ice.
Getting to the Ice Palace is easy: walk from the Sportivnaya metro station for about ten minutes, the same amount from the Chkalovskaya station.
What else is attractive about the palace? There is a buffet where you can always refresh yourself. The range includes hot drinks, sandwiches and other snacks. Skate rental and sharpening. And all this for a relatively small fee.
Promenade renovation
In the XVIII-XIX centuries. the coastal fortifications of the Zhdanovka River were made of wood. Part of the destroyed wooden wall can be seen downstream on the left bank.
Since 1963, granite has been used to strengthen the coast.
Today, the Zhdanovskaya embankment is in need of repair, as the wear of the coastal wall has already amounted to more than 70%. Serious damage found. Near the water, granite has separated from concrete blocks, and in some places it is completely absent. Cracks detected.
It is planned to repair a section of the coastline from the Zhdanovsky bridge to Maly Prospekt, 468 meters long. The works are estimated at 27 million rubles. The renovation completion date is October 15, 2019.
