November 3, 1966, a significant event happened in the city of Yaroslavl - a bridge across the Volga River was opened. It was supposed to serve as a crossing that connects the Oktyabrskaya Square of the Leninsky and Kirovsky districts with the Urochskaya street of the Zavolzhsky district.
From history
The history of the Oktyabrsky Bridge dates back to the distant 60s, when the bridge became the first of its kind. It served as a road transport crossing the Volga in Yaroslavl. Until that moment, there was a bridge built in 1913 that carried rail traffic.
This bridge was not intended for passengers, and people moved from one coast to another exclusively by ferries. Such a crossing, of course, could not suit anyone. For several decades, bridges were built across the Volga, but they could not carry out a quality crossing for the rapidly developing road transport.
And build a bridge
Only 50 years later, local authoritiesbegan to solve the question of how to carry out the crossing from one side of the city to the other for people and cars. The local ferry could not provide the necessary flow of traffic and was not safe enough.
Talented designer
The project was developed by a talented Soviet architect-bridge builder and engineer Yevgeny Sergeevich Ulanov. He was also famous for being the brother of the world famous ballerina Galina Ulanova.
And chose the location
The location of the bridge was not chosen by chance. From the side of the central part in the XII-XV centuries there was the Peter and Paul Monastery, and already in the XVII century - a temple in honor of the apostles Peter and Paul. In the early 1930s, this monument was destroyed. This place is two kilometers north of the junction of the Kotorosl and Volga rivers, it became the point for the construction of a new bridge.
Start of construction
Various media sources of those years testify that the grandiose construction began at the end of 1964. The technology developed by the engineers was truly unique: reinforced concrete parts that were held together with a special synthetic adhesive and cables.
Under control
Construction was carried out under the supervision of the Moscow Institute of Giprotransmost by the method of a hinged and balanced bridge. The new technique made it possible to finish the work incredibly quickly and with high quality.
Called October
2 years the construction of a new crossing was carried out, and 3November 1966, a grand opening ceremony took place. The October Bridge was named on the 49th anniversary of the Great Revolution of 1717 in honor of the upcoming 50th anniversary of this event.
Oktyabrsky bridge gave rise to the rapid development of new areas of the city, especially Zavolzhsky. It also became a direct passage to the capital for vehicles.
Difficult 2000s
Over half a century of history, the Oktyabrsky Bridge has been overhauled 4 times. There were also all sorts of attacks by vandals, after which repairs or cleaning were required.
Repair of the crossing was last carried out in 2013-2014. The asph alt surface survived the repair, which deformed over time, supports, lighting, railings, and some other structural elements of the bridge were replaced. The repair was carried out in two stages: first, barriers were installed that let only public transport and cars for public services pass, then they launched another branch for the passage of private cars.
Testing the bridge
The main strength test of the bridge took place on August 21, 2014 from one in the morning until five in the morning. Traffic at this time was completely blocked. During the tests, the bridge withstood a load of hundreds of tons, as required by the technical regulations. The final renovation was completed on August 30, 2014.
Bridge condition today
In the first half of 2018, public figures began to celebrateanother deterioration in the quality of the road surface of the bridge. Although the warranty period has not yet passed since the last repair. The designers say that the reason that the bridge is starting to crumble again is a sharply increased traffic load in the direction of the Zavolzhsky district, which has been actively developing and overgrown with new houses for a short time.
Features
The total length of the Oktyabrsky bridge with the entire roadway is 800 meters, and the length above the water surface is 783 meters. The width of the bridge with all the railings is 18 meters, and the height above the water surface of the vault is 26 meters. The Oktyabrsky Bridge was designed according to the scheme so that it has a roadway that passes vehicles in one direction and the other, as well as a bicycle and pedestrian path.
