Eduard Sagalaev - who is he?

In Russia and even in the countries of the former USSR, there are hardly any people who do not know who Eduard Sagalaev is. The biography of this man is replete with merits in the field of journalism, and later - television and science.

But few people know that Eduard Mikhailovich has two names and a nickname like a cat.

Childhood and youth

The future journalist Eduard Sagalaev was born in the city of Samarkand, Uzbek SSR. Date of birth - October 3, 1946. As a child, he was an ordinary tomboy who did not want to study music and liked to walk with the guys in the yard.

The beginning of his career fell on the years of study at Samarkand State University, where he was a student of the Faculty of Philology. While studying youngthe man played in the city's drama theater and also worked as a radio announcer when he entered his third year.

First successes

After graduating from university in 1967, Sagalaev was appointed to the post of editor-in-chief of the Committee on Television and Radio Broadcasting under the regional executive committee of Samarkand. Two years later, he began working for the Leninsky Put newspaper, in the party life department.

Thanks to good characteristics: party member, young, married, journalist was offered a position in the Tashkent newspaper "Komsomolets Uzbekistan" as an executive secretary. But he did not stay there for long - work in this position lasted from 1972 to 1973.

Then Eduard Sagalaev was invited to Moscow, to the press sector of the Komsomol Central Committee. According to him, everything developed in such a positive way quite by accident: it just turned out to be at the right time in the right place. Meanwhile, the young man was rapidly climbing up the career ladder.

The beginning of a career in television

After graduating from the Academy of Social Sciences, in 1975, Eduard Mikhailovich became deputy chief editor in the youth editorial office of television. This appointment was surprising both for Sagalaev himself and for his colleagues - he was only a year in Moscow, and such career ups were amazing. But the journalist explains it simply: he was "burning" with work, he didn't even walk along the corridors of the building, but ran, he wanted to do so much and be in time.

In five years hebegins working at the Yunost radio station as editor-in-chief, and four more years later as editor-in-chief in the youth editorial office of the State Radio and Television. Sagalaev is one of the creators of the then popular TV programs "Vzglyad", "Twelfth Floor" and others.

It was at this time that Eduard Mikhailovich received from his colleagues the nickname Mustachioed-striped. For the fact that he liked to dress brightly and catchy in his youth, and came to work in the editorial office in a suit with black and orange stripes, similar to an Uzbek robe. As the journalist later recalls with a laugh, he had "not very good" taste then. He was the youngest member of the editorial staff, but at the same time one of the most talented.

Career in the era of perestroika

In 1988-1990 Sagalaev worked as an editor-in-chief in the information department and deputy chairman of the USSR State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company. And also heads the editorial office of the TV show "Time", which was produced by this company, and hosts the program "Seven Days".

The last broadcast was eventually closed due to accusations of not objectively reflecting reality. At this moment, Eduard Mikhailovich decides to leave the rest of his positions - he simply writes a letter of resignation to nowhere.

Later, in the 90-91s, he became the head of the Union of Journalists of the USSR, as well as the general director of the TV-6 channel. The appointment to the first post was unexpected for Sagalaev: traditionally, the chief editors of the Pravda party newspaper were appointed to this position.

In the same years, Eduard Sagalaev becomes firstone of the founders of the International Confederation of Journalists' Unions, and then its president. In parallel with this, he is a People's Deputy of the USSR, which he later recalls with horror and does not understand why he needed it.

"The dashing nineties": what opportunities did this time open up for Sagalaev

In the 90-97s, he became chairman of the International Commission on Television and Radio Policy together with former US President Jimmy Carter. The purpose of this organization is the accumulation and generalization of information about the conduct of television and radio business.

In August 1991, Eduard Mikhailovich was appointed deputy chairman of the All-Union Radio Company, and a little later, in January of the following year, the general director of Ostankino. But six months later, he leaves this responsible post of his own free will due to different points of view with the current authorities on what television should be.

In the same year, Sagalaev founded the Moscow Independent Broadcasting Corporation (MNVK for short) and was among its shareholders - along with such large companies as Lukoil, LogoVAZ and United Bank.

Sagalaev became the head of the organization and continues to maintain this post. At the same time, he was elected a member of the Russian Television Academy.

Fade out of TV screens

In 1996, Eduard Sagalaev leaves TV-6 and becomes the head of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Company. But, as he later recalls, he was approved for this position only in order to remove his predecessor, Oleg Poptsov, during the elections. At the same time, everyone was sure that Eduard Mikhailovich would not introduce "revolutionary sentiments" into the team. And so it happened, and a year later this post was taken by Nikolai Svanidze, and Sagalaev returned to TV-6.

In the summer of 1999, public figure Eduard Sagalaev became deputy chairman of the board of directors of the ORT television channel, but did not hold this position for long - until 2000. This organization was supposed to pursue scientific, cultural, social and other goals useful to society.

Refusal to work on television on the same scale Sagalaev only pleases: he claims it provided him with a happy old age with the opportunity to travel to different parts of the world. For example, he visited Ireland, the Himalayas and Bali.

Nationality of a public figure

As Eduard Sagalaev says, his biography did not reflect his nationality before, since his father was a Jew, and the mention of this could prevent him from moving up the career ladder. Subsequently, the journalist was ashamed that he had to hide such facts, and he even went to Ukraine to find his father's relatives.

Eduard Mikhailovich said that he always considered himself Russian - his ancestors come from a village in the Saratov region, from where they were deported to Samarkand under the Bolsheviks. The journalist traveled to his native places together with Alexei Pivovarov, who was filming a program about dispossessed families. True, the village from which Sagalaev's ancestors were from has disappeared. There's nothing left of herexcept for abandoned graves.
