Stavropol Territory, once part of the Southern Federal District (SFD), since 2010 has been part of the North Caucasian administrative formation separated from the SFD, along with Dagestan, Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachayevo- Circassian republics. Pyatigorsk, a resort town in the Caucasus Mineralnye Vody region, was chosen as the capital of the North Caucasus Federal District. This is the only district in Russia whose center is not an administrative entity and not even the largest city, because Stavropol remains the regional center.

This year the capital will be only 239 years old. The territory and population of the Stavropol Territory are small numbers that will be indicated in the article. We will also talk about cities and towns in the region.

A short story about the founding of the city

Stavropol in Greek sounds like "city of the cross". It was founded in 1777, and often these three sevens are called the guardians of the edge. Until the year 35 of the last century, it was called Stavropol-Kavkazsky, from 1935 to 1943 - Voroshilovsk, and only in 1943 returned the original, but already abbreviated name.

The territory of the region wasinhabited by peoples as early as the Eneolithic period, as evidenced by the settlements found during archaeological excavations. And the Tatar settlement, which is a unique property of the planet and located practically within the city, between the village of Tatarka and Stavropol, was once the center of the region and a rather large medieval settlement.

The settlement arose as a result of the end of the Russian-Turkish war. Then, after the signing of the peace treaty, it became necessary to fence the territory. For this reason, they began to build a fortress - the Azov-Mozdok line. The beginning of the construction of a powerful outpost dates back to 1777, hence the development of the city of Stavropol and the entire region originates.

The main attraction, which is the place where the regional center was founded, is the Fortress Wall. This is a fragment of the Cossack barracks, which has been preserved since the construction of the fortress.
