At all times there have been various forms of political action that are aimed at improving the development of the country. Whether isolationism benefits or has negative consequences is the topic of this article. We will understand what isolationism is and why it was invented.
What is isolationism?
Isolationism is a term that originated in the mid-19th century in the United States. This is the foreign policy of the States, adhering to which they did not get involved in the affairs of European countries and in any military actions that took place outside the American continent. The very policy of isolationism arose for a number of reasons. Firstly, the bourgeois category of the population created its own trading system, which did not require any overseas intervention. Secondly, the United States was rather weak in terms of military training. And thirdly, this policy helped them stop European interference in the affairs of the Americans and prevented British attempts to regain their lost ground.
Thus, the Americans could not participate in military conflicts with other countries due to the absence of any treaties, but simplyobserve the unfolding events from the inside. This approach has come to be known as the free-hands policy. And after that, the Monroe dictatorship was issued, which confirmed all the rights of Americans to pursue a policy of isolationism.
Principles of isolationism in the US
Creating such a powerful defense as isolationism, the Americans developed for themselves certain principles by which they would work. In the concept of US power, isolationism is:
- Foundation of "Fortress America" - a powerful system of protection against external influence.
- In this case, any country lost the right to attack.
- The United States also could not interfere in foreign affairs.
- Foundation of dictatorship in case of interference.
Thus, the US created a very comfortable position for itself. While maintaining the status of the American continent on a par with the European one, the country protected itself from any problems that arose in other countries.
Influence of isolationism
What does isolationism mean for other countries? Many people know that Hillary Clinton has been cooperating with China for about 20 years. However, the rise to the presidency of Donald Trump greatly influenced the plans. U. S. relations with China have become uncertain, and a trade war is likely to break out. In this case, according to experts, American isolationism will play into the hands of the United States, but internal conflicts in the country will be possible.
