Cape of Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal
Cape Khoboy (from Buryat - “fang”) is a unique natural monument, which is located in the very north of Olkhon Island. It has a pillar-shaped rock. From the water side, one rock of the cape resembles the face and bust of a woman (the profile of a female figure) - this is the rock of the Virgin. This can be seen on the ancient galleys of Greece.
This place is notable for the fact that it reflects amazing sounds from a huge monolithic rock with amazing sounds.
You can also see very rare relic (endemic) plants found in the only place in the world.
Herbs grow abundantly on the slopes of the cape. Lots of medicinal thyme (Bogorodskaya grass).
Cape Khoboy on Lake Baikal is a complex of picturesque rocks originally covered in places with orange lichens. There are through holes and unusual cracks on some rocks, giving this surprisingly exotic place a special touch.
The cape also has preserved ice age plants.
In clear weather, the Holy Nose (peninsula) is visible from the top, located on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal. Earlier, a long time ago, seals lived near the cape.
Legends of the Cape
The indigenous people of these places call Cape Khoboy a virgin or a woman. As one of the legends says, this rock was once an ordinary woman. Because of her intense envy of her husband, she was turned to stone by the gods. The legend says that as soon as there is no malice and envy left on the whole planet, this stone will again turn into that woman.
Another legend is connected with this cape. It is about a dragon that dropped its fang during a flight over the sacred Lake Baikal. Fang, having fallen on the cape, went deep into the earth, leaving a certain trace in the outlines of this island. Although some scientists believe that this legend is associated with people's memories of the fall of a certain body from space (possibly a small meteorite) many thousands of years ago. It is believed that just such a catastrophe could be the reason for the geomagnetic activity of this part of Olkhon.
On Khoboi, there is a constant powerful release of astral energy (numerous cases of the appearance of ghostly substances). In addition, local residents note that sometimes one can meet the spirits of ancestors or even their own former incarnations on the cape.
Especially great luck here is to see the spirit of the White shaman, which sometimes comes out of the waters of Lake Baikal.
Who visits Cape Khoboy?
Very often this cape is visited by representatives of various spiritual schools. In this regard, here you can often see an unusual picture, for example, a persondoing strange and unusual things.
For many Cape Khoboy is a place for meditation. On its northern part, these unusual "representatives" left a sign in the most prominent place - a red circle, and in it three dots (Roerich's sign).
But as a true symbol of shamanic legends, on the edge of the northern monolithic rock, at the most inaccessible height for a person, in the crevices of the cape, you can see two huge eagles' nests. According to ancient Buryat legends, the first who had the gift of shamanism was the son of the owner (the spirit of Olkhon), who lived in the form of an eagle with a white head. Until now, the veneration of this bird has been preserved precisely as the spirit of the island.
Opposite the cape itself there are good places for a wonderful rest and overnight stay - well-equipped pebble beaches.
Sights of Olkhon
Cape Khoboy can demonstrate a lot from its height. Olkhon is shown from there with a clearly visible skewed tectonic block, which is sheer in the east with rocks (height 200-300 m), and in the west gently descends towards the Small Sea.
Sometimes a thick fog is observed above the water.
Near Cape Khoboy there are two grottoes, the exit of which is oriented exactly to the sunrise. The sandy flat areas of these grottoes are convenient for overnight stays in sleeping bags. Lying in them, you can watch a beautiful sunrise. In the west of the island there is an inclined platform for performing shaman tailagans in spring. From there you can see the fang of Cape Khoboy.
