Kirov is a city on the Vyatka River. It is located northeast of Moscow, the distance between it and the capital is 896 km. The city is the center of the Kirov municipality and the region of the same name. It was here that the famous Dymkovo toy was first made. Its production is one of the oldest crafts, which originated in the XV-XVI centuries in Russia. The city is not only a historical and cultural, but also an industrial center of the Urals. Historical review

Let's start with the fact that before 1457 and in 1780-1934. the city was called Vyatka, and from 1457 to 1780. - Khlynov. Only in 1934 it was given its modern name. The city was first mentioned in 1374. However, there is no information about what the population of Kirov was like during this period. It is believed that at the end of the 16th century about a thousand people lived here. The first official information refers to 1811. Then the population of Kirov was 4,200 people. The first educational institutions already functioned in the city. One of them was a theological seminary.

The population of Kirov began to increase due to the development of manufactory production. The city is also known as a place of political exile. S altykov-Shchedrin and Herzen were also here. In 1913, the population of Kirov was already 46.4 thousand people. Thus, in a century this figure has increased tenfold. A significant increase occurred during the First and Second World Wars, since it was here that people fled in the hope of finding shelter. In 1989, 440,000 people lived in Kirov. During the period that has passed since the collapse of the USSR, the population of the city has increased by 14%. As of 2017, the city has a population of 501,468.

Gender and age structure

The city ranks 37th in terms of population in the ranking of the largest settlements in the Russian Federation. Most of the inhabitants are women. Men make up only 44% of the population. The vast majority of the inhabitants of Kirov are representatives of the older generation. Young people tend to move to St. Petersburg or Moscow. The able-bodied population of the city of Kirov is 310.6 thousand people. However, in reality, many of them do not work in the locality where they are registered.

Ethnic groups

According to the latest All-Russian population census, which was conducted in 2010, the vast majority of Kirov residents consider themselves Russians. The population of Kirov, which belongs to other nationalities, is 3.35% of the total. They are representatives of such ethnic groups as Tatars, Ukrainians, Maris, Udmurts, Azerbaijanis, Belarusians and Armenians.

Administrative-territorial division

The population of Kirov lives in four districts: Leninsky, Oktyabrsky, Novovyatsky and Pervomaisky. None of them is a municipality. Also within the enclave of the city limits are such microdistricts as Pobedilovo and Lyangasovo.
