Javed Karim is an American businessman of German-Bangladeshi origin. Known as one of the three co-founders of the popular YouTube video hosting. In his youth, he developed software for the PayPal Internet payment system. Today lives near San Francisco, California.
Biography of Javed Karim
The well-known programmer and entrepreneur was born on 1979-28-10 in the small town of Merseburg (GDR) in an international family. His father was Naimul Karim, a student from the South Asian country of Bangladesh. He came to East Germany to study chemistry at the Technical University of Merseburg. Here he met the future wife and mother of Javed Karim, Kristin, a native of the neighboring settlement of Wernigerode. Unusual for that time, a married couple attracted public attention, neighbors spread rumors. The couple faced manifestations of xenophobia.
In the end, their patience snapped and in 1982 they moved to live in Germany. At that time, the territory of the GDR was under the control of the Soviet Union, and it was not easy to do this. It helped that Naimul wasa foreign citizen of a friendly country.
Being a good chemist, my father got a job at the 3M technology company, owned by the Americans and engaged in the production of products for the pharmaceutical, mining, and automotive industries. However, in a new place, in the city of Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia), the relationship of a white-skinned German woman and a dark-skinned Asian was viewed with distrust. Naimul turned to management with a request to transfer him to the company's headquarters in the United States. His wish was granted in 1992.
Study
Actually, the conscious life of Javed, who in the American manner began to be called Jawed Karim, begins from that time. The boy graduated from high school in Saint Paul (Minnesota) and entered Urbana-Champaign - University of Illinois.
Already by this time he dreamed of computers and information technology. In 1998, Jawed joined Silicon Graphics, where he worked on 3D voxel control with a large dataset for volumetric rendering. The system is being used in the Human Imaging medical project, which created detailed human cross-sectional images combined into a single 3D model.
PayPal
The young man was attracted by programming, to which he devoted all his free (and not only) time. It got to the point that the young man abandoned his studies for a while. But there were good reasons for this. Javed Karim was lured into an interesting project - PayPal - one of the first and verysuccessful electronic payment services. No joke, among his colleagues was Elon Musk, the main newsmaker in the automotive and space industry in recent years. By the way, Javed did not eat bread in vain: he developed and implemented a real-time anti-fraud program for the payment system.
However, Karim Jr. clearly understood that without education, further professional development is impossible. He continued to attend lectures, especially in computer disciplines, and in 2004 received a bachelor's degree in computer science. Subsequently, he received a master's degree in computer science from Stanford University.
YouTube Father
While working at the PayPal office, Jawed Karim became friends with two enterprising colleagues - Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. Young people gushed with ideas, and at some point an original video hosting project was born. The idea was that any person in the world could post their video, which was stored remotely on the hosting and was available for viewing at any time by all the inhabitants of the planet. Thus, the trinity actually became the fathers of the now most popular project in the history of the Internet - YouTube. By the way, they say that it was Karim who came to know Eureka, although during the "sharing of the inheritance" he got a smaller share of the great trinity.
From the very beginning (since April 23, 2005) the startup has been enjoying incredible, ever-increasing success. "Business sharks", Internet corporations could not ignore such a successful project. Ultimately the servicebought out by Google, who offered the most attractive conditions. Javed, in particular, received the use of 137,443 shares of Google, which automatically made him a millionaire. At the end of the deal, his net worth was estimated at $64 million.
By the way, the first video on YouTube is “filled” with Javed Karim. The legendary video is called "I'm at the Zoo", and Yakov Lapitsky, an emigrant friend from the USSR, acted as a cameraman. It has been viewed 44 million times in 12 years.
In 2008, a millionaire programmer founded Karim Y Ventures. Her tasks include support, including financial support, of student startups.
Conflict with Google
Having taken possession of such a tidbit as YouTube, the administration of "Google" decided to "promote" its own social platform for communication Google+ due to the popularity of the service. This is a kind of fusion of a social network and a messenger, which was significantly inferior in terms of the number of active users to the same Facebook. Google did not find anything better than allowing comments on YouTube videos only through the Google+ service.
The public was outraged by this state of affairs, because one of the conditions was the loss of anonymity on the network. A petition was created in which over 250,000 users demanded that this rule be removed. One of the "revolutionaries" was Javed Karim. Under his first ever YouTube video, he wrote: "I can't comment anymore because I don't need a Google+ account." Ultimatelythe corporation has apologized to customers and relaxed its security policy.
