This article will address the question of how stocky they are. This adjective is used only in relation to those nouns that denote objects with roots? Or is it the other way around?

A large root size is a sign of stockiness?

If we consider this adjective from the point of view of its composition, we can single out the suffix -ast in it. It forms adjectives, for example:

• "big-eyed" - having large, eye-catching eyes;
• "whirlwind" - with a huge number of whirlwinds;
• "toothy" - with a large number of large teeth.

By analogy, stocky ones are those whose root differs in size. What has roots? Plants, teeth, hair, words. There is also a mathematical root. And they also call the root cause of some event, the ancestors of the clan.

However, all of these nouns, with the exception of the word "plants", will not fit the definition of "stocky".

This is going to sound pretty ridiculous: chunky hair, chunky family, chunky algebraic expression. And the value of the root in these cases does not play any role.

Meaning of "chunky"

This adjective, oddly enough, fitsnouns that refer to objects or living beings that have no roots at all.

These are people, animals, buildings, furniture.

Vasily was stocky: broad-shouldered and strong, he was not tall.

The she-bear went to the hunter, protecting her cubs, stocky and powerful, with eyes burning with hatred.

From the example it is clear that those to whom the definition "stocky" refers are small and dense creatures with a strong physique.

Following the city's tower blocks, this stocky building seemed to come to Earth from centuries long gone.

This example is about a building. Here, too, the adjective indicates fundamentality and stockiness.

A stocky tree stood beside the road with a three-girth trunk; it seemed like a hero, rooted up to the shoulders in the ground.

Here you can also trace the meaning of small stature and strong build. But, surprising as it may seem today, explanatory dictionaries indicate that stocky plants are those that have large and strong roots, and not the outer, visible part.

But hardly anyone today will allow himself to speak in this way: “My carrot was born stocky! The greens are so-so, two feathers. But the root is yes!”
