Museum complex of Leo Tolstoy
In 1911 one of the oldest literary galleries in Russia was founded. This is the Leo Tolstoy Museum. It was created on the initiative of people who were part of the community of admirers of the great writer's talent, including V. Ya. Bryusov, I. A. Bunin, I. E. Repin, as well as relatives of Lev Nikolayevich himself.
It should be clarified that the Leo Tolstoy Museum is a whole complex that has several buildings located in different cities of Russia:

- Astapovo Memorial Museum, where the great writer spent his last days (Lipetsk region).

Tolstoy Museum on Prechistenka
The main literary exposition dedicated to L. Tolstoy is located in the center of Moscow, in a building built in 1817 and owned by Lopukhin-Stanitsky. This is not only a museum, but also an architectural monument of the 19th century, an example of a unique building miraculously preserved after a fire in the capital, which is of historical value.
The building is a noble estate. It is built of wood, decorated with white columns and bas-reliefs on the facade.
The Tolstoy Museum is located on Prechistenka 11/8. This is one of the main and unique buildings on this street. It contains a collection of the great writer. The opening took place on December 28, 1911, a year after the death of Lev Nikolaevich. During the revolutionary movements, the fate of the museum remained in question. But in 1918 he was issued safe-conduct. In 1920, V. Lenin signed a decree that the house was assigned the right to exist as a museum.
Collections
The Tolstoy Museum on Prechistenka has been around for over 100 years. During this time, the permanent exhibitions have changed several times. For example, there was such an exhibition as "Leo Tolstoy is the whole world".
Today, everyone can see here an exposition called "Pay tribute to the great", dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the museum. It was opened in 2011year and presented in nine halls.
One of the collections includes pictorial portraits that were painted by various famous artists. Some of them knew L. Tolstoy personally, for example, I. Repin. He wrote not only Lev Nikolaevich himself, but also his relatives. Leonid Pasternak also closely communicated with the Tolstoy family, was well received into their house and often embodied what he saw there on his canvases. Among his works is the famous canvas "L. N. Tolstoy reading at the lamp" in 1909.
Besides paintings, the Museum on Prechistenka Street displays the writer's personal belongings and family heirlooms. For example, military awards and wedding accessories.
Interesting exhibits are also illustrations for the works of L. Tolstoy, which were created by his artist friends. As well as a collection consisting of a huge number of photographs that have survived to this day. On them you can see not only the writer himself, but also members of his family.
Events
Today, the Tolstoy Museum on Prechistenka welcomes everyone, from elementary school students to adults. In addition to the permanent exhibition, here you can watch thematic mini-performances. They introduce the writer's work in an unusual and interesting way.
You can find out what events are planned in the near future both by phone and on the official website of the complex. For example, the museum offers a cycle of evenings dedicated to Russian romance,where the topic of the role played by this piece of music in the life of the writer will be touched upon. As well as a temporary exhibition telling about the revolutionary events studied by L. Tolstoy. At the end of November 2017, there will be an exhibition on the work "Anna Karenina", where visitors will have the opportunity to see illustrations by Russian artists.

Before you get to the Tolstoy Museum in Moscow, you should buy a ticket at the box office. The cost of visiting the exposition for adults is 250 rubles. Pupils, students and pensioners, upon presentation of the relevant document, are given a discount. For them, the ticket price will be 150 rubles. For privileged categories of citizens, admission is free.
You can visit the museum alone or book a group service, which will include the services of a guide.
Prechistenka constantly hosts all sorts of events that operate on an ongoing basis. For example, thematic excursions, interactive classes (write a letter, watch a theatrical quiz, listen to a reading of one of the works of L. Tolstoy). But there are also events and exhibitions that are temporary.

The exhibition is open every day except Monday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays it is open from 12.00 to 20.00. On other days, the museum can be visited from 10.00 to 18.00. Checkout stops working in 30 minutesbefore closing.
It was stated above that the Tolstoy Museum in Moscow is located at the address: Prechistenka, house 11/8, next to the Kropotkinskaya metro station. Everyone can get here, as this place is located in the very center of the city. You need to get off at one of the stations: "Park Kultury", "Library named after Lenin" or "Alexander Garden".
Also, the museum can be reached by private car. But in this case, you should think in advance about where to leave the car and how much to pay for parking. Another option is to get there by public transport. First you have to take the bus number m3, number 15 or number 255, and then walk about 1 kilometer.
