Kazan is one of the largest cities in Russia in terms of population, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan. The transport system of the city is well developed: metro, trams, trolleybuses and buses. We will dedicate our article specifically to the Kazan tram network, tell about its history, features and main routes.
History and features of the Kazan tram
The first tram in Kazan entered the route on November 20, 1899, replacing the local horse tram. Today, you can take a look at the rolling stock running in the city a hundred years ago at the address: Esperanto Street, 8, near the Sukonnaya Sloboda metro station.
It is curious that by the end of the 20th century there were three depots in Kazan (today there is one), and the city's tram network consisted of 23 routes. But between 2005 and 2013, about two-thirds of the existing lines were dismantled. In the near future (until 2021), it is planned to build a circle line for a 33-kilometer high-speed tram route.
Today, the tram network of the capital of Tatarstan is run by the municipal enterprise Metroelectrotrans. The gauge in the city is standard and is 1524 mm, the electrification of the contact network is 550 volts. The cost of a single trip on the Kazan tram (as of 2017) is 25 rubles.
