Dagestan, whose flag will be described in this article, is a republic of the Russian Federation. The initial version of this state symbol was adopted in 1994. Subsequently, the cloth itself underwent some changes, and by 2003 they were officially recorded. Until that time, the country did not have its own symbols, since it was part of other state associations. So, during the existence of the Russian Empire, the peoples of the mountains were part of the Terek region, which used the state symbols of Russia.
Since 1919, it has been part of the North Caucasian Emirate, together with the lands of mountainous Chechnya and Ingushetia. As a flag, there was a cloth with a ratio of width to length of two to one, green, with an image in the center of a white crescent and three stars above it of the same color.

It was a rectangular cloth. The ratio of its width and length was, respectively, one to two. Horizontally placed colors changed each other in sequence from top to bottom:
- green;
- blue;
- red.
The cloth was used until 2003, until changes were made to the state symbol of the Republic of Dagestan.

Coat of arms
Flag of Dagestan,the meaning of the colors of which have already been described, is not the only symbol of the country. In 1994, the coat of arms was adopted. It reflects the historical, cultural and political unity of about thirty kindred peoples. They formed on a fairly small area of the North Caucasus.
A coat of arms was created in the form of a heraldic shield of white color, rounded shape. In its center is a golden eagle, above which is placed a disk of the same color, personifying the sun. It is bordered with a spiral ornament. Below on the shield are mountain peaks of light gold color, as well as the sea and the plain. Nearby is an image of a handshake, from which a ribbon runs in both opposite directions. On it is the inscription "Republic of Dagestan", made in white. The upper part is bordered with a golden stripe, and the lower part is bordered with two edgings. The left side of the piping is blue and the right side is red.
