Any city has its own symbols - coat of arms and flag. These are symbols of the municipality, which help to easily distinguish one city from another. Novokuznetsk (as one of the most ancient cities in Russia) has a very rich history associated with changes in its symbolism.

Images on city seals, which were previously considered coats of arms, appeared in the seventeenth century. By the time the foundation of the city of Novokuznetsk took place, a system of coats of arms had already taken shape in the Russian state. However, at the same time, at the beginning of the seventeenth century, the so-called "sovereign press" was actively developing. It was she who managed to get the new city of Kuznetsk.

In 1635, the first description of the seal appeared: "On the Kuznetsk - a wolf." The wolf was used as a symbol of the wildness and severity of this outback.

A hundred years later, the wolf on the seal was replaced by the city emblem. Now the wolf was no longer just standing, but running across the open field, and around were depictedwords about this Siberian province. This change occurred due to the fact that Catherine the Second legislatively approved a special provision, on the basis of which each city must have its own seal with a coat of arms.

Later, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Alexander the First issued an order, on the basis of which Kuznetsk received a new coat of arms in the form of a shield, made in the French style. The new emblem was actively used until the onset of the Revolution in 1917.

In the very first years of Soviet rule, the tradition of using coats of arms was a thing of the past. But each city needed its own symbolism. It is for this reason that the image of Kuznetsk has been completely changed.

To honor our past, in honor of the 380th anniversary of the city, it was decided to return the old emblem of the city of Novokuznetsk, which has been actively used since the beginning of the nineteenth century.

But there is one interesting fact here. Numerous residents (Novokuznetsk) use the coat of arms of the city with different images. Someone likes the coat of arms that currently exists, while someone prefers to use the Soviet image. For this reason, Novokuznetsk is one of the few cities that can boast the ability to use two coats of arms with different images at once.

Soviet emblem of the city of Novokuznetsk: description

In Soviet times, Novokuznetsk also had its own distinctive emblem, but it looked completely different.

The Soviet coat of arms was approved back in 1970. As the coat of arms of this city, a heraldic shield with an image was used. Against the snow-white background of the shield, which personified the snow-white nature of Siberia, an image of a stylized section of a blast furnace is placed. This section is made in bright red light, and next to it is a black square. Taken together, both of these drawings are symbols of Novokuznetsk's industry. Rays emanate from the black square, which represent solar energy. In the upper part of the shield, you can see the symbols of the walls of the famous Novokuznetsk fortress. This is a kind of tribute to the rich and interesting historical past of this city.

The emblem of the city of Novokuznetsk acquired its modern look after the adoption of the Resolution of the City Assembly in March 1998. This emblem is not only a symbol of the city itself, but of the entire region.

Description of the coat of arms of the city

The emblem of the city of Novokuznetsk is presented in the form of a shield, which is divided in two by a horizontal line. In the upper half is the Tomsk coat of arms, on which a snow-white horse runs across a clean green field to the right.

The lower part of the coat of arms depicts a forge on a golden background and all the tools belonging to it. This is a kind of tribute to the occupations of the indigenous inhabitants of the population of the Kuznetsk Territory.

The horse, which is depicted on the top of the coat of arms, used to be called"Kuznetskaya". This breed was considered very hardy, hardworking. In addition, she was famous for her ability to get her own food even from under deep snow.

The flag of the city is a large rectangular canvas, which is divided horizontally in the center by a wide black stripe. The resulting upper field is colored white, and the lower field is green.

In the center of the cloth is an image of the coat of arms of Novokuznetsk.

All colors used in the flag have their own meaning. The green and white background is in line with the colors used in the flag of Siberia. In addition, white is associated with virginity and innocence, while green is associated with hope and abundance.

The black stripe dividing the flag characterizes the coal seams located in the Kuzbass.
