The city is located in the semi-desert zone of the north-eastern section of the Astrakhan region, on the left banks of three branches of the Volga: Kalmynka, Akhtuba and Vladimirovka.

Akhtubinsk is the administrative center of the Akhtubinsky district. Communication with the regional center (Astrakhan) is carried outroad, rail, water and air transport. In the north, the district borders on the Volgograd region, on the western, southwestern and southern sides - on the Chernoyarsky, Enotaevsky and Kharablinsky districts, respectively. In the east, the district borders on Kazakhstan.

The territory is represented by a monotonous, flat plain with some saucer-shaped depressions. There are deep, short ravines in the valleys of the Akhtuba and Volga rivers.
