The youngest city in the Moscow region is the birthplace of Russian airship building, but is better known for being home to the famous Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. General information

The city is located in the northern part of the Moscow region, the southern and eastern regions have practically grown together with the northern regions of the capital. In the west, the city blocks adjoin the Moscow Canal (on the other side of which the city of Khimki is located), in the north the Klyazma River flows, and the Klyazma Reservoir is located.

The city got its name from the Dolgoprudnaya railway platform built in 1900. The name comes from the "long" (in the sense of long) pond located near the station in Vinogradovo, the ancient estate of the Pushkin family. In the XIX-XX centuries. this area becomes the center of the suburban dachaconstruction. To get to them, the Dolgoprudnaya stop is organized, in the vicinity of which the formation of a holiday village began.

In 1931, not far from the Dolgoprudnaya railway platform, the construction of an enterprise for the production of airships began. Over the course of several years, sheds, a gas plant, shops, residential and utility buildings were built. In 1935, the settlement received the official status of a working settlement and the name "Airshipstroy".

During the war, Dolgoprudny produced Po-2 aircraft, light aircraft designed by A. S. Yakovlev, Pe-2 dive bomber, Su-2 and Tu-2 bombers, Yak-6 night bombers.

In the post-war years, enterprises of the military-industrial complex began to develop in the city. In the 50s, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology was opened, the building of the radio engineering faculty and a residential building for employees were built. At that time, a plant for building products, a machine-building plant, and an automation design bureau also began to work. In 1957, the settlement received the status of a city of regional subordination, active improvement, construction of housing and cultural facilities began. In 1959, the population of the city of Dolgoprudny reached 32,959 people. The number of citizens has grown due to the attraction of labor resources from other regions of the country to the developing enterprises of the military-industrial complex. In addition, the village of Vodniki was attached to the city.

In 1963, Dolgoprudny became a city of regional subordination, several villages were annexed, including Shchapovo, Gnilushi, Kotovo and Likhachevo. Increased production at defense plants. In 1966-1971. Dogoprudny Machine-Building Plant (former "Dirizhablestroy") produced 506 An-2M aircraft, and from the late 60s began to produce air defense systems.

In 1970, the population of Dolgoprudny grew to 53,095 people. In the last decades of Soviet power, the city developed rapidly. The enterprises worked at full capacity, exporting products to many countries of the world. New jobs were filled by specialists from all regions of the country.

In 1986, the population of Dolgoprudny reached 70,000 for the first time. In the post-Soviet years, the industrial enterprises of the city fell into a period of protracted crisis. The volume of defense orders decreased, which caused job cuts. The enterprises did not pay wages for many months. The number of citizens declined until the 2000s.

The recovery and growth of the country's economy in subsequent years made it possible to upgrade the social infrastructure. Housing construction was actively carried out, this process was beneficially influenced by proximity to the capital. Modern trade networks, cultural and sports facilities were built. In 2008, the population of Dolgoprudny was 80,500 people.

The global economic crisis that began in 2008 has had a particularly strong impact on the construction industry and the marketcity real estate. At the same time, this negative impact was largely offset by an increase in orders in the military-industrial complex. In 2016, the population of Dolgoprudny for the first time exceeded 100 thousand, reaching a value of 100,567 inhabitants. As of 2018, 108,861 people lived in the city.
