It's amazing, but not everyone knows that horizons are not only the degree of education, but also the horizon. Let's talk more about the two meanings, and also talk about what can replace this slightly outdated definition.
Meaning
In the minds of almost any person, the word "outlook" is tightly connected with the school. Why is that? It is not difficult to guess: horizons are the favorite word of teachers. When someone who has already graduated from school says to himself: “Petrov has a broad outlook,” he will most likely do it in a teaching tone. So, the values (they were announced just above):
- Similar to the content of the definition of "horizon". The latter is the visible space that is available to the eye.
- This is what a person likes, what he is fond of. Those areas of knowledge where he is an expert.
Why is it better to replace the word "outlook", and how to do it?
We don't know about readers, but it seems to us that the word horizon is an outdated word with a clear Soviet flavor. And by the way, one should not think that everything Soviet should be forgotten on this basis, not at all. If asay, for example, about some films or books, then they are beautiful. At least, it is much better than modern ones, but the language of the Soviet era, including everyday language, was not the best.
On the one hand, we can say that the "horizon" is metaphorical. On the other hand, if the question arises, what does this even mean, then the imagery obscures the meaning, and when people talk to each other, they want, first of all, to be understood. How to painlessly replace the "horizon"? It's very simple: you can say about a person that he is educated. No need to say that someone is "broad-minded", this is superfluous.
Broad and narrow outlook
Begs the question, is there an expanded outlook? Perhaps we are slightly behind the language practice, but it seems that the concept of expanded horizons is the result of the computer age. Because extended versions of films and games are now in vogue, so for some reason the prefix “ras” is added to the adjective “wide”, although this is redundant.
The outlook is narrow and wide. If the first - a person is little or completely uneducated, then the second - a person is educated. But even in this case, not everything is so simple, because you can have a wide range of interests, but be uneducated, because the quality of knowledge is determined not so much by coverage as by depth.
Relatively speaking, any scientist, one way or another, in the course of his professional development narrows as much as possible, especially now, when any field of knowledge has acquired many details and particulars. Therefore, the time of the encyclopedists has passed, and the amateur, on the contrary, is expanse: he does not have to choose exactly where to specialize. It follows from this: a broad outlook is not always good, because the depth of knowledge is also important.
We hope that now the essence of the concept of “outlook” is clear, what kind of phenomenon it is. It is important to remember that if possible, it is better to be more specific, because this will make it clearer what exactly the person is talking about. In other words, if someone wants to say that his brother, matchmaker, friend reads a lot of books, understands the painting of the Renaissance, or knows the works of Hegel by heart, then let him say so. Do not obscure the essence of the matter with clerical phrases, the peculiarity of which, as you know, is fantastic abstractness and the same emptiness.
