In the Gagarinsky district of the north-west of the capital, on the banks of the Moskva River, Andreevskaya embankment is located. It represents the distance between two other Moscow embankments: Pushkinskaya and Vorobyovskaya. The borders between them are marked by two bridges: the Andreevsky pedestrian bridge and the Luzhnetsky bridge, through which the metro passes.
Location
Andreevskaya Embankment is located on the right bank of the Moscow River. This is the north-west of the capital, next to the Sparrow Hills. The Gagarinsky district, in which it is located, includes the territory from Vernadsky Street to the third transport ring. Its length is not so great - 1.2 kilometers. The closest metro stations are Vorobyovy Gory located at the end of the street and Leninsky Prospekt located a kilometer away.
The distance from the embankment to the Kremlin is about five, and to the Moscow Ring Road - about 11 kilometers. The embankment is located between the Moscow River and Sparrow Hills, whereforest area included in the natural park "Vorobyovy Gory". On its territory there are two ponds - Bolshoi and Maly Andreevsky, they are located along the Andreevsky embankment. Nearby there is a picnic area, a beach is equipped. The entire area of the embankment is equipped for comfortable outdoor recreation.
The large forest area of the Vorobyovy Gory Natural Park is a unique phenomenon. Five kilometers from the center of the giant metropolis is a forested area located on the hills, the highest of which is more than 80 meters. It offers an excellent panorama of Moscow. There is an observation deck and an aviary with birds.
History of Appearance
The Andreevskaya embankment of the Moskva River was named in honor of the Andreevsky Monastery, as well as the settlement and several streets bearing the same name and located here in 1902. It was at this time that the construction of the embankment began, its length was originally 338 meters.
Until 1970, stone and wooden houses were located here, which were mostly demolished. A building with an adjacent territory belonging to the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences was built here.
Monastery
There is a monastery on the territory of the modern Andreevskaya embankment. It was built in the XIII century, but the first documentary information about it appears only in the XIV. Until the XVII century it was known as the Preobrazhenskaya Hermitage. With the beginning of the construction of the temple dedicated to the holy martyr Andrew Stratilates, hegot its real name. Construction was completed in 1675. The temple was named in honor of the retreat from the walls of Moscow of the Crimean Khan Khazy-Girey with an army. This happened on the day of the celebration of the memory of this saint in 1591.
Here in 1648 the “Teaching Brotherhood” was formed, which included 30 of the most literate monks gathered from all over Russia, they translated church books, taught philosophy and rhetoric, and taught those who wished to read and write. Subsequently, a religious school was opened here, on its basis two higher spiritual institutions were formed in Moscow: an academy and a university.
After the transfer of the theological school to the Zaikonospassky Monastery, an almshouse was opened here, in which the foundlings were cared for. After its closure in 1731, dissolute women were kept here, who were engaged in weaving ropes for the admir alty.
The monastery was closed in 1923. Currently, it is not operating, but they plan to open it, but for now the patriarch's farmstead, workshops in which various church utensils are made, and the Synod library are located here.
Andreevsky Bridge
The left and right banks of the Moskva River near Andreevskaya Embankment are connected by a bridge. He, like everything else in the area, is called Andreevsky. It connects Frunzenskaya with the end of Pushkinskaya and the beginning of Andreevskaya embankments. In 1905, on the site of an old wooden bridge, designed by the famous architect Pomerantsev and engineer Proskuryakov, a stone bridge was built, which, after a shortreconstruction exists today.
Once it was a railway bridge. Now it is completely transferred to the possession of pedestrians. Tourists and Muscovites love to walk along the bridge. This place is a favorite for young people who come here to see the views and have a photo shoot.
Hurricane in Moscow
The hurricane that swept through Moscow on May 29, 2017 on Andreevskaya Embankment caused a lot of trouble. Trees were uprooted, uprooted. Heavy rains exacerbated the picture. About a third of the monthly rainfall fell in two days. The wind force reached 16 m/sec. This flurry knocked down a gazebo on Andreevskaya Embankment, killing two people.
Promenade today
In 2004, the Green Hills residential complex was built on Andreevskaya Embankment. Today, the sale of apartments and cottages continues. Passenger transport does not go here, the exit to the embankment of private transport is closed. This area is completely dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. On the embankment itself and the slopes of the Vorobyovy Gory there are benches, comfortable seating cubes where you can relax and look at the sailing ships. There are also sun loungers where you can sunbathe on a fine sunny day.
Bicycle paths have been opened that run along the Moskva River for more than 8 kilometers and connect the embankments: Vorobyovskaya, Andreevskaya and Pushkinskaya. Modern playgrounds allow for safe rollerblading, jogging and cycling.
