Dnepropetrovsk (since May 2016 - Dnipro) is a large city, the "industrial heart" of Ukraine. It is located on both banks of the Dnieper and has about a million inhabitants. The city is a significant industrial, scientific and educational center of the country. The districts of Dnepropetrovsk differ in area, population and the nature of development. They will be discussed in this article.
Organization and administrative division of the city
Today, about a million people live within the Dnieper (Dnepropetrovsk), founded in 1776. This is a rather harsh city with large industrial enterprises, bridges, massive buildings and universities.
Administratively, the Dnieper is divided into eight districts. Five of them are located on the right bank of the river: Central, Novokodaksky, Soborny, Shevchenkovsky and Chechelevsky, and three more are on the left bank (Amur-Nizhnedneprovsky, Samara and Industrial districts).
Dnepropetrovsk is also usually divided into residential areas, microdistricts, as well as historical areas. If you carefully examine the map of the city, you can see many curious and unusual names: Mandrykovka, Chechelevka, Parus, Poplar, Igren and others.
In 2016, many districts of Dnepropetrovsk (like the city itself) were renamed. Five of them received new names. In addition, about three hundred more city toponyms have undergone a renaming procedure.

As can be seen from the table, the districts of Dnepropetrovsk differ significantly from each other in terms of area and number of inhabitants. So, the leader in terms of size and population is the Novokodaksky district. He is considered the oldest of all. Another interesting feature: all renamed districts of the city are located exclusively on the right bank of the Dnieper.
Novokodaksky district is the oldest one
In 1920, the Novokodaksky (Leninsky) district was established. Dnepropetrovsk at that time developed rapidly: old factories were restored and new ones were built, educational buildings and cultural centers were erected. It was within this region that the center of all Ukrainian metallurgy was located at the end of the 19th century.
After the end of the Second World War in the Novokodaksky district of Dnepropetrovsk, three huge sleeping areas grew up: Kommunar, Parus and Red Stone. Today, within its boundaries are the most important iron and steel enterprises of the city: DZMO, factories named after. Petrovsky and them. Lenin.
There is a unique building on Chechelevka - the huge Palace of Ilyich. It was built in 1928 and is an architectural monument of national importance. The building is considered a vivid example of Soviet constructivism, an architectural style that was popular in the 1920s and 1930s.century.
Industrial district: history and features
The industrial district occupies a relatively small area in the northern part of the city. The largest residential areas within it are Klochko and Levoberezhny-3. Until the 1920s, on the site of the modern district, there was a village with the strange name Sultanovka, which arose in connection with the rapid development of industry in Yekaterinoslav.
After the war, high-rise residential buildings are being actively built on the sandbanks of the river. In 1969, the Industrial District was established within its current boundaries.
The name of the district fully justifies itself: 18 large enterprises are concentrated here, which represent almost the entire spectrum of Ukrainian industry. Their products are known far beyond the borders of not only the city, but also Ukraine. Among the most famous enterprises of the region: Interpipe Steel, Dneprometiz OJSC, Dnipro garment factory and others.
One of the most interesting monuments of the city is located on the territory of the Interpipe Steel complex. This is a grand scale installation in the form of a huge artificial sun. The height of the monument is 60 meters. The author of the project is the famous artist Olafur Eliasson.
