Earlier, probably in my childhood days, people often used this word. And now, you see, they begin to think. "Dude … Who is this, actually?" - They are perplexed. Of course, other definitions are now popular, including slang ones, denoting people who are constantly preoccupied with their appearance and the fact that "there is absolutely nothing to wear." However, the term is still not dead, and let's think about its meaning.
What does the word "dude" mean? Yes, simply "dove", if literally translated from French. What does its etymology tell us? Why dove? Probably because these birds love to show off and show off their beautiful feathers to everyone. Although peacocks do it better, for some reason this word has gained popularity in Russian. Thus, this person loves to present, to demonstrate himself for show. This is the real dude. "Who is this?" - in admiration, like him, obviously he imagines himself, people around him should ask. In fact, this very definition clearly shows some contemptuous disapproval. Why? Perhaps this is due to mannerisms and a certain "theatricality" with which this character presents himself.
So, let's try to define the components of this type of dude. Who is it? Well, of course, man. Then, he must have appropriate attire, but not only. The way he or she behaves, speaks, addresses others - all this in a certain "ostentatious" style. And this is not just about a person who is used to dressing with taste or who speaks like a snob. Everything in it should give out a certain excess, overflowing. He seems to be trying to show that he is much higher and more refined than all other society, and society, accordingly, responds to him with an ironic-sarcastic attitude.
Interestingly, not every person who likes to dress for show causes such a negative reaction. For example, "dandy", "dandy" or "dandy" - these words carry some positive characteristics. The last category of fashionistas was, as it were, the fundamental basis for describing such a type as dude. "Who is this?" - asked about the dandy. But this group of people still had taste, a sense of proportion and an idea of decent manners. In dudes, all this is practically absent. It can be said that at the end of the 20th century this word denoted mainly people who tried to show others ("gray crowd") theirexcellence through rich, fashionable, but often vulgar clothing and expensive items and exclusive accessories.
Currently, this type began to be called by different terms, including "glamorous". These are people who would like to be perceived as a dandy, but they do not have the inherent ability to behave properly and pick up things "in style". But in abundance there is an unwillingness to reckon with others and self-centeredness. So society actually laughs at them and despises them.
Although in recent times in modern culture there are attempts to give this word a certain charm. For example, the famous film by Underwood "City Slickers" tells how the show-off heroes passed the exam for real men. And the famous Channel One program of the same name and its hosts are trying to show the mass public a different type of series than soap operas and miserable criminal showdowns.
