Vityaz - museum ship
The largest research vessel "Vityaz" is moored at the berth of the embankment. It is a single-screw double-deck motor ship, characterized by a straight inclined stem, sharply collapsed bow formations and a cruising stern. The history of this vessel captures the Soviet, German and Russian periods. At different times it changed its name. In 1947-1949. the ship was converted into a research vessel and became owned by the Academy of Sciences, having received its last name - "Vityaz". He sailed for 30 years (since 1949), made a total of 65 scientific voyages, covered more than 800,000 miles and completed 7942 scientific papers. On board the Vityaz, the largest ocean depth (11,022 m) noted in the Mariana Trench was measured. Thanks to the ship, a new species of animal was discovered - pogonophores. A school of Soviet oceanology was formed on board the ship, while scientists from 50 scientific institutes of 20 states worked on expeditions.
"Vityaz" participated in the project of the InternationalGeophysical Year, as well as in other major international programs. The vessel was received with honor in 49 countries of the world and 100 ports. Notable guests of this ship were some presidents, prime ministers, honorary cultural figures, famous scientists, for example, Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The last visit of the "Vityaz" was to Kaliningrad, and here for the whole 11 years his fate remained uncertain. In 1992, taking into account the contribution of the ship to the study of the World Ocean, it was decided to save it as a museum. Two years later, after repair and restoration, the Vityaz was moored at the Kaliningrad embankment.
