There were no prospects in the regional Volgograd, and he went to St. Petersburg without even asking for the consent of his parents, but simply putting them before the fact. But they did not mind, understanding the importance of sports for their son. This step was right, because it started a series of awards, victories and high success.

In St. Petersburg, Marinin graduated from the Academy of Physical Culture. He became the ward of coach Vasiliev. At the age of 20, Maxim joined the Russian national team. Tatyana Totmyanina became a figure skating partner for many years.
