Wuhai City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is a city of extraordinary beauty and contrasts, where the majestic sand dunes of the desert give way to the seething waterfalls of the Yellow River. But for one person, the Ulan-Bukh desert will become an arena in which he will throw an important challenge to his own abilities.
Wang Yonghai lost his leg in a car accident when he was 19 years old. One day, by sheer chance, he caught a paracyclist training, which took place not far from his house. Inspired by what he saw, Wang decided to train and subsequently became a regular competitor in handicapped cycling.
Wang Yonghai was a member of the PRC Paracycling Team from 2001 to 2011 and competed in numerous domestic and international cycling events, earning him 6 gold medals and many other awards. At the 7th National Paralympic Games, he took the "gold" in the 5 km race. In 2007, Wang participated in the International Paracycling Championships held by the International UnionCyclists (UCI) in Colombia and the third most important race in the LC3 category.
After leaving the national team, Wang decided not to stop there. He took part in the 2013 Qinghai Lake Tour along with non-disabled athletes and completed the course in 13 days. With his fortitude, he impressed the whole country and was awarded the "Best Disabled Athlete of 2013" by the Chinese broadcaster CCTV Sports. In 2016, he completed a 2.160 km journey in 18 days along the Sichuan-Tibet highway, finishing at the Potala Palace and becoming the first disabled cyclist to successfully overcome the difficult inter-provincial crossing.
But Wang's biggest challenge will be crossing the desert at the Wuhai International Cycling Championships starting August 26. Organized by the Randonners Club of China (ROCn) under the auspices of the Audax Club of Paris (ACP), this cycling event will see athletes overcome a grueling 200km stretch that will take them at least 13 hours to complete.
