The city of Neryungri is located in the Far Eastern Federal District and is the administrative center of the Neryungri district of the Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia. Neryungri is located 820 kilometers from the capital of Yakutia, the city of Yakutsk, if you use the Lena highway.
The history of the appearance of Neryungri
The population of a small tent camp established in 1940 in the valley of the Chulman River consisted exclusively of members of the exploration expedition. Soviet geologists arrived in this far corner of the Sakha with the intention of discovering a new gold deposit.
It is worth saying that since the end of the seventeenth century, Russian colonists and explorers arrived in this region, but they did not linger for a long time in such a harsh climate and moved on in search of new peoples and forests rich in furs.

Actually, a permanent tent settlement appeared at the mouth of the Neryungra River in 1952, simultaneously with the foundation of an exploration party. However, the first overburden was made only eleven years later - in 1963. Four years later, coal mining began in the area of the tent camp and multi-storey buildings began to appear, which later formed a modern urban settlement.
Neryungri today
Today Neryungri, with a population of about 52 thousand, is the second largest city in the republic. The city is located in a complex terrain, formed by low hills with flat tops. These hills are a kind of foothills of the Stanovoy Range.
The economic basis for the existence and development of the city is the coal mining industry and transport. Despite the fact that the population of Neryungri has been steadily declining since 2010, the city is still considered a promising point for the development of the economy of the East Siberian region.
The large Lena highway and the railway to Yakutsk pass through the city.
