The sea port of Olya is located in the Limansky district on the banks of one of the largest branches of the Volga - Bakhtemir. The distance from the city of Astrakhan is approximately one hundred and twenty kilometers. The construction of the port of Olya began in the 1990s, after the government made an official decision to revive the Russian fleet in the Caspian Sea.
A few years later, in 1997, this port began to handle more than 400 tons of various cargoes for each calendar year. A special access road was equipped for the delivery of goods, which significantly reduced the cost of delivery and handling. During the construction of the port, the road was connected to the P-216 and P-215 highways.
Already since 2006, the port began to handle more than two million tons of the most diverse cargo. According to experts, by 2020 the port of Olya will be able to handle more than ten million tons of cargo annually.
Main line of business
The port purposefully specializes in the transportation of various types of cargo. Transportation of materialscarried out all year round. In addition, vehicles and trains are engaged in freight deliveries. Due to this, the goods can be delivered to the Caspian Sea from anywhere in the Russian Federation in the shortest possible time.
The main transportation is carried out to the Caspian countries (Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Iran), as well as to India and Pakistan. The most popular destinations for cargo delivery are Baku, Aktau, Atyrau and Anzali. A ship of any tonnage can moor at the Astrakhan port of Olya during stormy weather. In addition, the port has a repair shop and a supply base. To date, there are nine berths, the depth of which is up to five meters. Foreign vessels can also be accepted at the port, as customs checks are in progress here.
Transportation
The port of Olya is connected to the federal highway Astrakhan - Makhachkala, through which passenger transportation is carried out daily. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the port established a ferry service, which functioned properly until 2012. Then it was closed for renovation.
In 2001, the port of Olya in Astrakhan began to carry out cargo and passenger transportation along the railway line. Short deadlines were allocated for the construction of railway lines in order to ensure constant supplies. Management did not delay the financing.
In the summer of 2014, the grand opening of the Yandyki branch - the port of Olya took place. However, after the completion of construction, the station could not cope with the flow of goods, whichhindered the activities of the Astrakhan hub. The average downtime of trains varies between 13-15 days from the date of receipt.
How to deliver the goods to the port?
The most economical ways to deliver cargo through the port of Olya are road and rail transport. The latter are implemented along the federal highway Astrakhan - Makhachkala. Railway transport carries out transportation from Yandyki station and is accompanied to the port railway station. This method can transfer a large amount of cargo in a short time, which is very important now.
Physical and geographical characteristics of the port
Terrain formation is a key factor for the delivery of goods to the Caspian Sea. In ancient times, this area was flooded, but gradually the water receded, which led to the formation of a plain. One of the main features of the area are the Barovsky hillocks.
Soil and climate
The seaport area consists mainly of semi-desert soil. For the cultivation of rural products, it will be necessary to additionally fertilize the land with black soil. In addition, the soil in the port has a sandy texture in some places.
In the area of the port of Olya, temperate continental climate prevails. In warm seasons, drought can be observed. Constant winds are observed on the territory, which is typical for this area. Due to the constant winds, dust and sand accumulate there. The dry period begins in July and lasts until mid-September due to low rainfall.
Autumn doesn't leave much rain behind. Winter is moderate, but the first frosts occur already in early November. The climate in the port area is often unstable, due to which severe frosts can be abruptly replaced by thaws and vice versa.
Summing up
Today the seaport of Olya continues to improve its cargo delivery lines, thereby receiving large contracts from both the Russian Federation and many foreign countries. New equipment and transport are being purchased, which allows delivering materials in a short time, spending a minimum of funds. Every day, the turnover of goods that passes through the port is increasing and will soon reach five million tons per year. These are very optimistic forecasts, so we can safely say that the port of Olya has a great future.
