Earthquakes occur time after time in the Altai Territory. The local population even developed something like immunity to this natural phenomenon. It happens that people don’t even notice new shocks, but there are very tangible shakes with a roar, furniture shaking and other unpleasant surprises. Undoubtedly, it is important to know where in Altai and why such surprises happen.

Recent earthquakes

February 4, 2019, another earthquake was recorded in the Altai Territory. Tremors were registered at nine in the morning near the village of Kytmanovo, at a depth of ten kilometers. Local media, citing official sources, reported seismic activity in the area of the Salair Ridge, which is 33 kilometers east of Zarinsk. In the epicenter, the average intensity of shaking was noted, their magnitude was 2.8 units on the MSK64 scale. It is also noted that five days earlier, on New Year's Eve, at 16.40, another earthquake occurred in Altai, with a magnitude of 3.4 points. Then the tremorsrecorded in the Biysk-Barnaul depression. Both of these recent earthquakes in the Altai Territory passed without any serious consequences.

Altai earthquake statistics

According to statistics, shaking in Altai most often occurs in the Kamensky district, located in the place where the Earth's crust breaks, or rather the crosshairs of the faults. There are two of them: from Shipunovo to the Novosibirsk region - about 800 km, from Krutikhinsky to the Khabarovsk region - 70 km. It was there in the last century, in February 1965, that a powerful 7-magnitude earthquake happened.

Yes, and recently in the Kamensky district, nature has already shown itself to be such phenomena more than once:

1. On December 25, 2018, at the beginning of the first night, the Altai-Sayan Geophysical Survey recorded a 4-magnitude underground shock with an epicenter near the settlement of Pankrushikha. Residents of the village located 4 km from the epicenter did not notice anything.
2. On January 9, 2019, a 4-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Altai Territory on its border, about 20 km from Ikstim. Tremors of magnitude 3.4 were also recorded near Stone-on-Ob.
3. On January 17, a 3-magnitude shock was recorded 25-26 km southeast of Kamen-na-Obi.

According to experts, with an earthquake of magnitude 4, cracks may appear on high-rise buildings due to swaying. But so far, the Kamenians are only sharing their impressions of the strange rumble, roar and shake with the clink of dishes. No aftershocks forecast.
