Maxim Gorky Square is one of the central city squares. It is located at the intersection of Maxim Gorky and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya streets. The square is named after the great Russian writer. History

In the 19th century, a ravine was located on the site of the current Gorky Square, which was filled in during the work. The architect of the current attraction is G. Kizevetter. The first contours of Gorky Square in Nizhny Novgorod were outlined in 1842.

At first, a prison prison was built here, in which there was also a prison school, and a little later, an orphanage for boys, which was opened by Countess O. Kutasova. In the 20th century, at this shelter, the Church of St. John the Evangelist was built, which was later demolished.

At the end of the 19th century, every Wednesday, peasants from the surrounding villages and villages came to the square to arrange the most crowded bazaarin the upland part of the city. In Soviet times, the malls were slightly shifted towards Belinsky Street and received the name "Medium".

Earlier, the square had other names: Novaya, Arrestantskaya, Novobazarnaya, May Day and, finally, Maxim Gorky Square in Nizhny Novgorod.

Present

Now a square has been laid out on Gorky Square in Nizhny Novgorod, and a transport ring passes around it. Nearby rises many residential and office buildings with cafes, restaurants and shops.

The main attractions of the square are:

• Monument to Maxim Gorky. Architects - V. V. Lebedev and P. P. Shteller, sculptor - V. I. Mukhina.
• Communication House - Main Post Office.

In 2012, the first and currently the only metro station in the Nagornaya part was opened on the square, which is also a kind of attraction. Thanks to the opening of this station, traffic jams in the area of the square have been significantly reduced.

How the monument to Gorky was erected

The monument was erected rather slowly. In 1939, the city authorities announced an All-Union competition, the winner of which will be given the opportunity to develop a project for the monument. The competition was won by V. I. Mukhina, who was also the sculptor of the Worker and Collective Farm Woman monument in Moscow.

Because of the outbreak of war in 1941, work on the monument was completed only in 1947, after a seven-meter bronze sculpture of the writer was cast in Leningrad. The monument found its present place in 1952. It was then that the square became known as Maxim Gorky Square.

How to get to Gorky Square in Nizhny Novgorod

One of the largest transport arteries of the city exits this square: Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street and Maxim Gorky Street. You can get to it by different transport:

• A-1 from Varvarsky Street to the bus station in Shcherbinki;
• A-5 from Gorky Square to Sloboda (Podnovye);
• A-16 from this area to micro-district "Kuznechikha-2";

• A-30 from the square to the Keramik plant;
• A-40 from microdistrict "South" to Upper Pechery;
• A-41 from LCD "Flowers" to the shopping center "7th Heaven";
• A-43 from Shcherbinki to Litvinov;
• A-45 from ZKPD-4 to Upper Pechery;
• A-64 from Krasnodontsev street to Usilova street;
• A-68 from Cosmic to Minin and Pozharsky Square.

Trolleybuses:

• 9 from Kuznechikha-2 to Gorky Square;
• № 31 from Shcherbinki 2 microdistrict to Minin and Pozharsky Square.

Minibuses:

• T-4 from Varvarskaya Street to Shcherbinki;
• T-18 from Upper Pechery to 7th Heaven shopping center;
• T-34 from Litvinov Street to Upper Pechery;
• T-37 from Gorky Square to Petryaevka station;
• T-47 from Tsvety Residential Complex to Sorting Settlement;
• T-50 from Dolgopolov to Litvinov Street;
• T-57 from Upper Pechersk to Krasny Sormovo;
• T-74 from Litvinov to Upper Pechery;
• 97 from Bridge Crew toTB dispensary;
• 98 from Space to Business.

Also, the metro from the lower (over the river) part of the city runs to Gorky Square in Nizhny Novgorod. You can get there from the Burevestnik station with a transition to the Moskovskaya metro station.
