Kovzhskoe lake (Vologda region) is located in the Vytegorsky district. It has another name - Lozskoe. The length of this water body is 18 kilometers, and the width is 4 km. The area of the water surface is 65 km2. The lake is one of the water bodies of the system of lakes, which includes much larger reservoirs. In the north, it passes into Kuzhozero, and in the south it is connected by a channel with Pavshinsky Lake.

Geography of the lake

The catchment area is 438 km2. The lake is located at a moderate height above sea level - 162.3 meters.

From the southwestern part, which has a separate name - Lake Lozovskoe, the Kovzha River originates. On the shore of the lake is the village of Loza. There are other villages on the coast: Ryumino, Yashkino, Kyabelovo. The P5 highway is laid next to the reservoir. In winter, the lake is covered with ice.

Although this body of water looks like a natural object, it can also be considered asreservoir, since the flow is blocked by a dam, which is located on the Kovzha River leaving it.

The water body is part of the Volga-B altic waterway. The origin of the name is connected with the name of the river Kovzha, which means “birch” in the Vepsian language.

Nature of the lake

The lake is surrounded by deciduous, coniferous-deciduous and coniferous forests. The banks are often low, with gentle slopes. The bottom is dominated by silt deposits. Various types of fish are found in the reservoir: perch, roach, carp, pike, bream, crucian carp, pike perch, vendace, burbot, ruff, ide. The maximum level of fishing was observed in the 30s of the twentieth century. And in 1988, young Kuben nelma were released into the water.

This is a favorite place for fishermen. Fishing on Lake Kovzhskoe takes place all year round. Due to the good ecology and picturesque surroundings, the reservoir is suitable for a relaxing outdoor recreation. Leaving trash behind is not accepted here.

Features of the reservoir

Kovzhskoe lake is located in the north-west of the Vologda region, in the Vytegorsky district. It belongs to the Caspian Sea basin, although it is very far from it. The average depth is 5.9 meters, and the maximum reaches 16 meters. As for the Kovzha reservoir, the average depth there is less - 3.5 meters, and the maximum reaches 20 meters.

The water in the lake comes from several small rivers and streams. The volume of incoming water is small. Kovzhskoye lake-reservoir has a complex shape, and also hasisolated reservoirs. Fluctuations in the water level are insignificant and are regulated by man. Mineralization of water is small and amounts to 50-100 mg/liter. Water has a neutral level of acidity and is saturated with oxygen molecules. The organic content is increased, and the visibility underwater is about two meters.

The highest part of the coast is the southern one. It is dominated by hilly terrain with heights up to 35 meters. In other parts of the coast is low, slightly hilly. The coastline is winding, and the entrance to the water is gentle. The shores are composed of stones, sand, swampy in places. In the coastal zone, the bottom is sandy and rocky, and deeper than two meters - muddy, hollow with holes, silted.

The most interesting objects at the bottom are ferromanganese nodules located at the maximum depth (16 m), looking like peas or beans, as well as powder ore near the northwestern coast.

There is little vegetation in the lake. It is represented by reeds, rushes, reeds, horsetails, elodea, water lilies, cattail, sedges and other plant species. Blue-green algae live in the water itself. Because of them, the flowering of the reservoir is observed every year. In addition to them, you can find green, golden, euglena and cryptophyte algae here.

Zooplankton is present in water in small quantities. These are mainly crustaceans - cladocerans (cladocera) and cyclops. Mollusks, oligochaete worms, bell mosquitoes, nematodes, etc. live in the bottom substrate.

Near the lake, sites of ancient people from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages were discovered.

Recreation center on Lake Kovzhskoye

The recreation center is located in the village of Loza (about 60 km from the city). These are modern buildings on the shore of the lake. Buildings fit moderately into the local landscape.
