Sometimes the sky is illuminated by the reflection of fires burning on the ground (fire, illumination). Sometimes the reflection of the sunset paints the atmosphere in a variety of colors. This phenomenon is called a glow.

With its beauty, it invariably inspires creative people, and mystics look for secret signs in this. This word has a romantic connotation for many.

What does Dahl's dictionary know about the glow

The Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language by Vladimir Dahl not only explains what a glow is, but also provides a lot of interesting information about the life of this word and its derivatives in folk speech.

Here are some of them:

• In the hoary old days, the month of August (aka sickle) was also called "glow". It is unknown, however, due to celestial phenomena or due to the beginning of the roar of deer in the mating season.
• Luminous (illuminated) sunset clouds herald a windy day.
• Zarevnik is the name of a year marked by a large number of fires.
• Zarevnitsa (or zarevnitsy) was celebrated on September 24 on the day of St. Fekla.
• Appear and stand the glowdenoted by the verb to roar.
• The adjective zary was used in the sense of ardent, passionate, fiery (like a glow). Zarny was called not only perky, passionate, indefatigable and desiring something, but also envious, greedy.

Glow and UFO

Ufologists often deal with a mysterious glow in different parts of the world. According to some of them, the pink glow hanging over the surface of the water is the light of pure energy that space aliens direct into the reservoir to support life in it.

These researchers of the beyond believe that such a glow in the sky appears at the moment when the inhabitants of the planets of the solar system who supervise the Earth take away the negative accumulated in the water.

But it often turns out that the mysterious glow has neither mystical nor alien causes. For example, in the fall of 2010, the residents of Izhevsk were convinced that they were at the epicenter of a UFO invasion.

This is due to a strange glow that blazed over the city, it was visible from a distance of 50 km.

It turned out that the unusual illumination of the sky was due to local greenhouses, in which vegetables were grown using new technologies, irradiating them with special lamps for days.

And a few more examples of the use of the word "glow" as proper names:

• Russian combat helicopters use a thermal vision and targeting system called Zaryevo.
• It's not hard to guess whichthe fruits of the West Siberian apple trees of the “glow” variety have the color. At the end of August, these small, juicy, sweet and sour apples ripen. They are yellow with a delicate red blurred over the entire surface.



• In the Khislavichsky district of the Smolensk region there is a settlement with that name. There is also a natural monument of regional significance "Park of the village of Zarevo". Its woody variety during golden autumn creates a glow on earth that can compete with atmospheric.

These are all possible meanings of the word that are known today.
