In 1948, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources) commission introduced the "Red Book of Facts". To create it, it took many years of work in order to collect all the information on endangered species of animals and plants.

All species of animals that are listed in the Red Book are divided into five categories:

• I. Endangered species.
• II. Rare species.
• III. Reducing species.
• IV. Little studied species, i.e. indeterminate.
• V. Refurbished. These are species that have been successfully rescued and are no longer in danger.
