Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich is known to us as a popular host of a television program about travel. But few people know that he is a doctor by training. Just like his parents, Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich received a diploma from the Military Medical Academy. His children followed the same path.
The start of the journey
The traveler was born on March 4, 1937 in the town of Bain-tumen, in Mongolia. Was married twice. From his first marriage he had a daughter, in the second he raised his wife's son. Initially Senkevich Yury Alexandrovich was engaged in science. In 1962, he worked at the Institute of Aviation and Space Medicine, and also at the Institute of Biomedical Problems. The topic of his scientific research was the behavior of the organism in extreme conditions. But it so happened that the population of our country is not aware of the scientist Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich. His biography changed after he went on an expedition to Antarctica in 1967.
Twist of fate
Of course he wasinvited to participate in a cold survival experiment as a doctor. But the travels themselves and the opportunity to describe them - along the way, he kept a diary for the magazine "Friendship of Peoples" - fascinated him much more. And since then, wandering has become the main meaning of his life.
International travel
Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich and Thor Heyerdahl in 1969 set off on a papyrus boat called "Ra" across the Atlantic. The meaning of this expedition was to pass through the ocean in the same ways that the ancient peoples made such journeys. The leader of the expedition was Heyerdahl. The team consisted of only 6 people and was international.
It consisted of: Thor Heyerdahl (Norway), Carlo Mauri (Italy), and also Georges Sorial (Egypt), Norman Baker (USA), as well as Madani Ait Uhanni (Morocco), Keya Ohara (Japan). Only six. Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich got into it not only because he was a doctor. He knew English very well, had a broad outlook and a sense of humor. However, the team's enthusiasm did not help the boat cope with the elements. "Ra" sank, the people who sailed on it were saved by the Americans. Therefore, the trip was decided to be postponed until 1970. At that time, a strong vessel called "Ra-2" had already been built, and sailing from Morocco, having overcome 5,720 km, the travelers safely sailed to Barbados after 57 days.
Find Evidence
After that, Thor Heyerdahl decided to findconfirmation of his new theory that civilization spread by sea. For this, a new boat called "Tigris" was built. After preparation, the team set off from the place where the Tigris and Euphrates cross. The boat reached African shores five months later in March 1978. Thus, Heyerdahl confirmed that the vessel, made of reeds, is capable of withstanding heavy loads, which means that long-distance travel could be made on it.
Various Interests
Although Senkevich took part in long trips, he already worked as a host of the Film Travel Club. He took this position in 1973. Here he worked for 30 years until 2003. He attracted viewers with his youth, relaxedness, and the ability to tell interesting stories. In addition, he talked about what he saw himself, and this is always more interesting than theory. From 1973 to 1982, Senkevich combined the work of a TV presenter with the position of head of the department of scientific medicine at the Institute of Microbiological Problems.
He also had to participate in the preparation of the expedition led by Dmitry Shparo. And in 1983, he climbed to the top of Everest along with other participants. Soviet people first visited Everest, although they had to overcome significant difficulties during the ascent.
Dear transfer
Yuri Senkevich's life was interesting and eventful. He managed to passfascinating and loved by many. Popular travelers became members of the Film Travel Club: Jacques Mayol, Mikhail Malakhov, as well as Carlo Mauri, Jacques Yves Cousteau and Bernhard Grzimek, Thor Heyerdahl, Bruno Vaillati, Fedor Konyukhov. The TV show is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest on television, and Senkevich as a TV presenter who has worked in this position for the largest number of years without a break.
In addition, the TV show has won many awards, both Russian and foreign, and Yuri Aleksandrovich has orders and medals, including "Friendship of Peoples", "Badge of Honor", and Senkevich is a laureate of the state award. In 2002, he suffered a heart attack. And in 2003, the whole country learned that Senkevich Yuri Alexandrovich had died. The cause of death is heart failure. It turned out to be pointless to continue filming The Travel Club after his departure. The viewers still lacked something, no matter how interesting the topic of the program was, so it is no longer aired.
Details on paper
The traveler left behind filming programs and expeditions. But the main thing that Yury Alexandrovich Senkevich passed on to his descendants was books. They contain his memories and reflections that will be of interest to travel lovers even in the future. "On the "Ra" across the Atlantic" tells how Sienkiewicz worked as a ship's doctor during expeditions with Thor Heyerdahl. He writes in detail about what happened during this period. The author shares with the reader his reflections on how communication took place in an interethnic team in a limitedspace in difficult conditions.
In the book “In the Ocean “Tigris”, the writer tells how the second expedition went with the Norwegian traveler. In addition to stories about the team, the reader will learn about various cities and countries: Djibouti, Oman, Pakestane, Iraq, Bahrain. The book also features color photographs, which makes it especially interesting.
"Discoveries for kids" tells about amazing journeys. Yuri Alexandrovich wrote it, dreaming to interest children in nature and geography. He wanted them to love the Earth and want to see distant lands, traveling and enjoying it, just like himself.
Not only about myself
Together with Alexander Shumilov, Senkevich wrote two books: “In search of unknown lands. The fate of the great travelers”, “The horizon called them”. They tell about geographical discoveries, biographies of famous travelers: Sedov, Columbus, Schmidt, Miklukho-Maclay, Steller and others.
Memoirs written by Senkevich Yury Alexandrovich - "A lifelong journey". In it, he talks about his life since childhood. The book will be useful to those who want to learn about the famous leader and traveler what he can tell only himself. There the reader will also find stories about expeditions, in which Sienkiewicz reveals the characters of the crew members and describes the places they happened to see.
What is interesting about this man's fate? Probably the fact that he was always lucky. Few can boastthat he managed to see as many new things as Yury Senkevich could during his life. It can be considered lucky that he was once invited on an expedition to the north, which turned his whole life upside down.
