The founder of the Scouting movement is Robert Baden-Powell. Among other tasks, they went to reconnaissance and delivered reports.

At the same time, the boys unexpectedly showed their best side, fighting no worse than adults. They distinguished themselves by diligence, courage and ingenuity. Thanks to them, the garrison held out for 207 days before reinforcements arrived.

Movement organization

Baden-Powell realized that the training of military intelligence should begin from childhood. Later, when he became a general and returned to England, he founded the Scout movement there. Their first camp was held in 1907 on Brownsea Island, and in 1908 the book Scouting for Boys was published and received worldwide fame.

The author of the very idea of scouting is the artist and writer E. Seton-Thompson, who created the world's first children's squad, calling it "Forest Indians". Baden-Powell built on this experience in many ways, but created a fundamentally new youth organization, receiving the title of baron for this.

Initially, this movement was conceived as the preparation of boys for service in the British army and was adopted first among the Entente countries as a method of educating the younger generation, and then throughout the world. The innovation of scouting was that here children and adults were united in one organization, regardless of races and confessions. Although adults led the children, the relationship between them was built on an equal footing.

Scouting in Russia

In Russia, the beginning of the birth of scouting is 1909. Histhe founder was Colonel Pantyukhov Oleg Ivanovich, who in 1919 was awarded the title of Senior Russian Scout. The scout bonfire was first lit in Pavlovsky Park in April 1909.

In 1910, the book "Scouting for Boys" was delivered to Nicholas II from England and aroused his keen interest, as it was consonant with his thoughts. It was translated into Russian. The first attempts to educate pre-conscription youth at the official level were unsuccessful. They boiled down to drill and basic training without any game element.

Soon, the tsar sent the staff captain A. G. Zakharchenko to Great Britain to study the experience of the scouts, who formed the scout squad in Moscow. The first congress of scouts took place in 1915, he approved the charter, structure and symbolism of the movement. In 1917, there were already 50,000 Scouts living in 143 cities.

After the revolution

After the October Revolution, this movement began to gradually disintegrate. In 1919 he was declared a reactionary, monarchist and bourgeois phenomenon, and persecution began against him. In the USSR, only the pioneer movement, built on the basis of scouting, remained.

Officially scouting was allowed in the country in 1990. And then Russian scouting began its revival. As of 2007, it had approximately 30,000 participants. To date, there is no single organization of scouts.

The Scout Method

Having caught the desire of children for informal communication, Baden-Powell realized that they wanted to unite with each other in order to realize their needs and interests. Therefore, the Scouting movement was created by him as a long-term game of scouts who seek to benefit nature, people and the world as a whole.

In accordance with these goals, children and adolescents are brought up using the Scout method, the basics of which are expressed as follows:

1. Voluntarily assuming obligations to realize your civic duty, duty to God and to yourself.
2. Patrol and small group system.
3. Personal growth through special programs.
4. Active activities in nature.
5. Traditions and their replenishment by participants.
6. Putting theory into practice.
7. Constant adult support.

"Be ready!" - the motto of the movement, which is closely related to its original patriotic character. It echoes the words of Baden-Powell, who, in one of his articles, urged participants to be ready to die for their homeland, if necessary.

Laws

A Scout's life is based on a set of laws. Each organization formulates them differently. For example, for one of the organizations uniting Russian young scouts, the laws of scouting are:

1. Loy alty to God, devotion to the motherland, parents and leaders.
2. Honesty and truthfulness.
3. Help others.
4. Friendship with everyone and brotherhood with scouts.
5. Following the instructions of parents andsuperiors.
6. Politeness and helpfulness.
7. Love for nature and animals.
8. Frugality and respect for other people's property.
9. Purity of thoughts, words, deeds, soul and body.
10. Hard work and perseverance.
11. Cheerfulness and good spirits.
12. Modesty.

Symbols and traditions

Scouts have a number of distinctive signs, symbols and traditions. Here are some of them:

1. Emblem. Represents a lily, the three petals of which symbolize the three basic duties of a scout, as indicated above. On the lilies of Russian scouts - St. George, their patron.
2. Handshake. It is carried out with the left hand, as it was borrowed by Baden-Powell from African tribes, who held a spear in their right hand, stuck it into the ground and took a shield from their left hand into this hand. By this they demonstrated their trust.

They visit those places where there is the greatest concentration of young people - shopping centers, auditions, beaches, pop and rock concerts, restaurants, nightclubs.
