The meaning of some words that are often used in colloquial speech is not entirely clear. For example, the word "residence". This seems to be the place where high-ranking people are and work - officials, deputies. On the other hand, it is also called living quarters. And the word itself sounds rather strange for the Russian language.

What does it mean?

Residence is a word with multiple meanings:

• location or workspace of government officials, spiritual and secular - from the patriarch, president or monarch to lower-ranking people;
• a residential area where official receptions of important guests are possible;
• capital, the main city in which leadership is concentrated;
• representation of a foreign state or a certain mission, which is permanent.

Thus, jokingly calling hisapartment residence, a person uses the word quite correctly, in accordance with one of its meanings. Residence is both a place of residence, and work, and the status of a city. For example, at the time of the Olympic Games held in our country, Sochi was a residence. Another example is the Moscow residence of the patriarch. The head of the church lives in this room and receives people who come to him on various issues, both priests and ordinary people.

Often in colloquial speech "residence" is used in an allegorical, joking sense or with sarcasm. For example, when a person calls a dog kennel or a hamster terrarium a residence.

Specialists who study word formation and languages in general are not completely sure where the roots of the word "residence" are, but many are inclined to its Latin origin.

The only thing that is certain is that there is a word residentia in the Latin language. In Latin, "residence" is the house of a government member, such as a senator or emperor. Or the administrative building of any authority.
