Everyone who has read the book "Game of Thrones" knows Prince Doran Martel as a smart, cunning and very cautious person. In this article, we will tell you about this hero and what are the differences in the storylines of the film and the book.
Who is Prince Doran Martell
This character is Prince of Dorne and Lord of Sunspear. He has a younger brother, Oberyn, nicknamed the Red Viper for his ferocious nature. Doran also had a younger sister, who was killed by Gregor Clegane during the overthrow of the Mad King. Doran Martell is an incredibly cautious and prudent person. He is not prone to hasty actions and always makes complex plans.
Doran has a wife with whom he does not live. Even twenty years before the events described in the book, Doran met Lady Mellario. Then they decided to marry. But the difference in characters and upbringing prevented them from living happily, so Lady Mellario left for her homeland. At the same time, Doran Martell decided to keep the children, spoiling relations with his wife even more. The marriage was not dissolved due to the laws of Westeros.
Prince of Dorne's storylineseries
After the start of the civil war, Doran Martell (actor: Alexander Siddig) summons his banners, but is clearly in no hurry to enter the war. Tyrion sends a mail raven to Dorne with a proposal to marry Myrcella (Cersei's daughter) to Tristan Martell, thus cementing the alliance between the Martells and the Lannisters. At the same time, Doran himself could receive additional lands and castles, as well as take a place of honor at the small council. A separate and somewhat ambiguous item in the letter was the promise to extradite the murderers of Elia Martell and her children to Dorn. With the prince's consent, Tyrion sends Myrcella to Dorne. Doran, aware of how dangerous an alliance between the Martells and Lannisters can be, asks Areo for protection from the impending threat.
After a while at a joint dinner with Jaime, Tristan and Ellaria, Doran says that his loy alty to the king of Westeros is unbreakable and that he is ready to send Myrcella and Tristan to the capital. The latter is to take Oberyn's place on the small council. After that, Doran forces Ellaria, under threat of execution, to swear allegiance to him.
Soon after, Jaime, Myrcella and Bronn leave Dorne. Ellaria, wetting her lips with poison, kisses Myrcella and wishes her a pleasant journey. After sailing, Ellaria drinks the antidote, and Myrcella dies in Jaime's arms.
When a raven arrives in Dorne with the news of Myrcella's death, Ellaria and Tiena commit high treason and kill Doran. At this point, the storyline of the Dornish prince can be considered complete.
Doran's storyline in the book
Book plotDoran Martell's line in Game of Thrones (book) is more complex. Differences between the series and the book begin to emerge after Oberyn's assassination in the capital. In the book, the prince makes far-reaching plans related to the restoration of the Targaryen dynasty.
At first, Doran Martell wanted to marry his daughter Arianne to Viserys Targaryen. But after learning that Viserys was killed by the Khal, the prince changes his plan and sends his son Quentin across the sea to propose to Daenerys Targaryen.
Sand Snakes (illegitimate daughters of Oberyn), dissatisfied with Doran's policies, begin to build evil plans against him. Arianna arranges the kidnapping of Myrcella, which turns out to be a failure: Arianna is taken into custody, and Myrcella loses her ear during the duel. The knight from King's Landing, who guarded it, also dies. Doran Martell realizes that his caution is causing discontent among the Sand Snakes and the common people, so he reveals some of his plans to Oberyn's daughters and makes an alliance with them.
Quentin Martell arrives in Meereen and is rejected by Daenerys. After the last of the Targaryens flies on Drogon, the son of Martell and his companions decide to release two dragons locked in one of the pyramids. Failing, Quentin tragically dies from his wounds.
