Dmitry Shmelev was born on January 10, 1926 in the capital - Moscow, then still the Soviet Union. His father was a famous doctor, academician of sciences and director of the institute. Dmitry Nikolaevich studied well and therefore graduated from school as an external student, later entered MGIMO, after studying there 3 courses, transferred to Moscow State University as a philologist. In 1955 he wrote his Ph. D. thesis.
He was a high school teacher and also taught at several reputable institutions. His most famous monograph was written in 1973. He became a Corresponding Member in 1984 and a Full Member in 1987.
His role in science
Dmitry Shmelev played a rather important role in the development of Russian lexicology and theoretical semantics. His monograph on the topic "Problems of Semantic Analysis of Vocabulary", which he wrote in 1973, is best known. He was the author of a high school textbook on lexicology. In addition, he studied Russian syntax, studied the historical evolution of grammar, Russian lexicology, but morehe paid attention to the study of general problems of stylistics and styles of fiction.
