Kandinsky Prize: to whom and for what?

For ten years now, our country has been annually awarding a national award to the best representatives of contemporary domestic art. Over the years, it has already counted several dozen laureates and is recognized not only in the Russian Federation, but also abroad.

History of the Award

In the form known today, the Kandinsky Prize was created only in 2007.

However, this was already the second reincarnation of the reward.

For the first time, the Kandinsky Prize was established by Nina Kandinsky, the wife of Vasily Vasilyevich, a few years after the artist passed away. Then it lasted 15 years.

The Kandinsky Prize, founded by Shalva Petrovich Breus, had several goals. But the main rule was to be easily accessible and understandable for all artists to participate.

The Kandinsky Prize is distinguished by the fact that masters have the opportunity to apply for participation on their own, without the mediation of museums and galleries.

The jury was planned to be exclusively international, which has been observed for a decade now.

Today the Kandinsky Prize seeksdevelop contemporary Russian art. The main goal still remains to find new projects and young artists and involve connoisseurs in the cultural life of the country.

A little about Kandinsky

Wasily Kandinsky rightfully deserves the honor of giving the name of such a major award. The Russian artist, one of the founders of abstractionism, is an inspiring example of a man who conquered his dream. At the insistence of his parents, after graduating from Moscow University, a successful young lawyer refuses his professorship and at the age of 30 begins his career as an artist. He worked in Russia, Germany, France.

Vasily Vasilyevich is best known while living in Germany. During his creative life, Kandinsky visited Africa, traveled around Europe, organized and headed several creative associations. Expositions dedicated to his work are held everywhere to this day.

In what categories are awards given

Laureates of this year's Kandinsky Prize became "anniversaries" at the same time. During the tenth ceremony, awards were presented in three categories.

In 2012-2013, the award was given only in the first two categories.

Previously, from 2007 to 2011, there were three, the same number since 2014.

Since the foundation of the award, the classic “Project of the Year” and “Young Artist” have been supplemented by the award “Media Art. Project of the Year. Later the last category was replacedfor the award in the field of scientific papers and publications.

The first prize is about 40 thousand euros. This is the largest financial award among all in the post-Soviet space.

Interestingly, in addition to the monetary reward, artists get the opportunity to take part in exhibitions throughout Russia and abroad, which helps to promote their own creativity.

How Candidates Become

To get on the list of participants and try your hand at winning an award, first of all, you need to announce yourself to the organizing committee.

Then your application will pass all stages of voting. The procedure is the same for the categories "Project of the Year" and "Young Artist" and only slightly different for the "Academic Work". In the selection of tenders for all categories, experts united in the council and the board of the international jury take part.

So, at the first stage, the council draws up the so-called long list, a long list of candidates.

The short list of the Kandinsky Prize is formed at the second level, and the selection is already carried out by the jury of each individual category. This short list includes all finalists for the Prize.

Laureates are determined already at the third stage.

Winners

The first award ceremony was timed to coincide with Wassily Kandinsky's birthday - December 4th. There were also four symbolic winners of that year. Anatoly Osmolovsky conquered the commission with his "Products" of aesthetic militarism. Vladlena Gromova submitted to the jury the video work "Portrait" about a person "without his own Self".

Winner in Media categoryart" Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe took the prize for participating in the restoration version of the film "Volga-Volga". At the same time, they voted for the "Audience Prize for the best work of art", the winner of which was Petr Goloshchapov.

During the 10th anniversary ceremony, three authors have already received the award. Andrey Kuzkin, laureate of the nomination "Project of the Year", impressed the jury with the project "Right to Life". Victor Misiano took the prize for his publication Vinogradov and Dubossarsky. The girl with the original name Super Taus conquered the top in the Young Artist category.

Prizes were won by such authors as Alexey Belyaev-Gintovt, Zakharov Vadim, Albert Yury, Podoroga Valery. The Kandinsky Prize reveals unknown names and presents them to the viewer at exhibitions organized and held around the world.
