This man will forever go down in national history, because it was he who was not only an eyewitness to the events that led to the collapse of the great Land of Soviets, but also a member of the political structure that attempted to prevent the destruction of the USSR. Of course, we are talking about the State Committee for the State of Emergency (GKChP), in which Gennady Yanaev played one of the key roles. He positioned himself as a patriot of the country, and the ideals of communism were perceived by him as something unshakable and sacred. Yes, in August 1991, Gennady Yanaev became a participant in a coup d'état, and for him it became perhaps the only chance to preserve the "socialist" empire, which occupies 1/6 of the land. But this attempt turned out to be a failure, and the party functionary fell into disgrace, landing in places not so remote. However, he was soon released and began to live the normal life of an average Russian.

Higher echelons of power
Yanaev's career could be envied by every party functionary. In the summer of 1990, at the next party congress, he not only received membership in the Central Committee of the CPSU, but also became a member ofPolitburo. At the same time, party colleagues elected Gennady Ivanovich secretary of the Central Committee, who was obliged to oversee international issues. But high appointments were not limited to this. At the end of 1990, Yanaev received the post of vice president of the country. In this capacity, he will remain until September 1991.
Threat of collapse of the Land of the Soviets
Soon, processes began in the country that could lead to the collapse of the USSR. The regions located on the outskirts of the country began to declare independence. The Republican Communist Parties less and less obeyed the instructions of the CPSU. The allied political nomenklatura began to fragment, and representatives of the regional political elites wanted separatism. The situation in the country was seriously destabilized: the incumbent president, Mikhail Gorbachev, eventually succumbed to pressure from those who wanted autonomy and were ready to sign a treaty on the CIS. But the Politburo of the CPSU did not like this development of events, it created the State Committee for the state of emergency.
GKChP
This structure was supposed to prevent the collapse of the country. Gennady Yanaev also appeared in its composition. First, the committee made an attempt to convince the head of the country, Mikhail Gorbachev, to introduce a state of emergency throughout the entire territory. Then the members of the GKChP switched to fighting the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR and Boris Yeltsin, who was supported by supporters of the "renewed" state. But the battle for power was lost, and then the committee took a radical step - they removed Gorbachev from the management of state affairs and forcibly kept him at his dacha in Foros. Such actions of the State Emergency Committeesubsequently qualified as a coup d'état.
Arrest
The putschists failed to keep the old regime by force, and all of them were arrested. This fate did not pass and Gennady Yanaev. In August 1991, he was charged with high treason. He is sent to "Matrosskaya Tishina", where he is serving his sentence. In 1993, deputies of the lower house of the Russian parliament granted amnesty to those involved in the coup.
