Uvek

On the outskirts of Saratov, in the Zavodskoy district, the ancient city of Uvek was located. It is conditionally considered that its borders are the mouth of the Uvekovka River (northern side), the Neftyanaya station and the Volga River on the eastern side, and the Volga Upland on the western side.

Scientists believe that the city was founded in the XII century. Most likely, the prisoners who were driven here by the Mongols from different parts of the conquered country were engaged in the construction. The discovered artifacts suggest that there was a trade and craft center here.

Uvek is mentioned even in Marco Polo's book. The traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited it in 1334, speaks of it as a small settlement, with beautiful buildings and great prosperity, but with a too cold climate.

Numerous finds suggest that Uvek had its own minted yard. The coins are quite well known, on one side there is an inscription: "Eternal glory and the honor that accompanies it." The other side of the coin indicated the year and place of minting. Since the last coins that were found date back to the 70s of the XIV century, this period is considered a period of decline, and this is associated with landslides on the banks of the Volga. The final date of the death of the city is 1395, when Tamerlane pursued Tokhtamysh.

The development of the Zavodskoy district of Saratov was activated in the 70s of the last century, when the Uvek slide was excluded from the register of protected historical sites.
