Michael Cunningham is an American short story writer, screenwriter and director. He is best known for his 1998 novel The Hours, which won the Pulitzer Prize in the Fiction category. Cunningham also lectures at Yale University.

Biography of Michael Cunningham

Cunningham was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States of America on November 6, 1952. Raised in Pasadena, California. He studied English Literature at Stanford University where he received a degree in English. He later enrolled at the University of Iowa, where he received a scholarship and a Master of Arts degree from the Iowa Creative Writing Education Program. During his studies, his stories were published in the Atlantic Monthly and in the Paris Review.

His short story "The White Angel" was later used as a chapter in the novel "The House at the End of the World" and was included in the "Best American Short Stories of 1989" list published by Hogton Mifflin.

In 1993, Michael Cunningham received the Guggenheim Award. In 1995 he was awarded the Whiting Prize. Studied art in ProvincetownMassachusetts. Took a creative writing course at Brooklyn College.

The Hours made Michael Cunningham one of the most powerful contemporary writers in the United States in the eyes of readers and critics.

Cunningham edited W alt Whitman's collection of poetry and prose, Rights for Creatures, and co-wrote Susan Minot's script for the film adaptation of Minot's Evening. He also became the producer of this film. It starred such famous actors as Glenn Close, Toni Collette and Meryl Streep.

In November 2010, Michael Cunningham was on the jury of the Three Minute Fiction Writing Competition.

Private life

Michael Cunningham is gay and is in a long-term civil marriage with psychoanalyst Ken Corbett. Michael does not advertise his homosexuality, because he does not want his literary works to be associated with his personal experiences and personal life. Cunningham doesn't like being portrayed as a gay writer.

Michael Cunningham began to write in his youth, the passion for literature was with him all his adult life. Despite the fact that he objectively achieved great heights in the literary field, he continues to study, strives to learn something new, attends meetings of literary figures. He also helpseducate a new generation of writers and literary scholars by lecturing at Yale for years. Appeared in several films.
