The twenty-seventh state of the USA, washed by the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, was called blooming and sunny. By and large, this is not surprising, because during the year in Florida the thermometer rarely drops below +20°C. The state's climate is recognized as an important and valuable natural resource. Warmth and evergreen palm trees attract many guests to these parts. They strive to get to the luxurious and seething with irrepressible energy of Miami, as well as to the hot and mountainous Tallahassee (the capital of Florida), which will be discussed further.
The city is beautiful, cozy and no longer young, and this makes it possible to enjoy not only the sea and the weather, but also organize a good cultural program. The official year of formation of Tallahassee is 1824. However, before the "whites" arrived here, the territory was inhabited by indigenous peoples - Appalachian Indians. We invite you to consider with us the places worth visiting when you are in Tallahassee.
Old and newCapitol
Two buildings stand side by side, like symbols of different eras. The magnificent old Capitol, built in 1845, is a building of both historical and architectural significance. It is located at the intersection of Monroe Street and Appalachian Boulevard, in the very center of the capital of Florida (USA). Now there is a museum here, which everyone can visit. Its exposition tells about the stages of formation of state legislation.
The new Capitol is impossible to miss. This is a bulky 22-story administrative building, which now houses the House of Representatives and the Senate. It was built in the 70s of the last century. The project reflected the demolition of the old Capitol and the expansion of the space. However, as soon as this became known to the locals, they organized a successful movement to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of the state. The result is an interesting place where two different historical eras "meet" and harmoniously coexist.
Nearby is a huge state park. Alfred B. Maclay with a botanical garden covering an area of more than four square kilometers.
Mission San Luis
The first Europeans arrived on the lands that are now occupied by the capital of Florida (USA) city of Tallahassee in 1528, as part of the expedition of the Spanish conquistador. The Indians met them with hostility, only four people managed to survive. The second attempt to settle in these places was made only 10 years later. Captain Hernando de Soto with 600 soldierscaptured the settlement. And in 1656, in its place, the Mission San Luis was organized by the Franciscan friars, which served as a religious, educational and military center for more than 1,400 Appalachian Indians.
Today, the Mission grounds in the capital of Florida is a national historical monument, visiting which you will immerse yourself in the atmosphere of those distant times. Here you will be happy to walk around a small garden, watch a blacksmith work, learn about the life of a typical Spanish family and, if you want, try the food that the first European settlers ate in the 17th century.
All buildings on the Mission site have been recreated with painstaking historical accuracy, including the five-story Appalachian Council House (pictured above) and the stave church.
Antique Car Museum
The capital of Florida boasts six major museums. They are dedicated to various topics and eras. One of the most interesting, of course, is the Museum of Antique Cars. The pleasure of visiting it will be received not only by motorists, but also by children. The exposition consists of a collection of vintage and rare models of Ford, Duesenberg, Chevy's, DeLorean, Corvettes. Also, this is where you can see the Bat Mobiles featured in Batman Returns.
In total, the museum features more than 140 cars, as well as die-cast toy models, vintage boats and their individual elements, bicycles, cash registers, spark plugsand more.
Florida History Museum
In this museum you will be able to learn about which capital of Florida and the whole state as a whole have an interesting history. Impressive and fascinating exhibitions are available to view absolutely free of charge, but if you wish, you can make a small donation.
The Florida History Museum, which opened in 1977, collects, preserves, displays and interprets evidence of past and present cultures that exist in the state. His attention is mainly focused on those exhibits and eras that are unique and distinctive for the history of Florida, and also speak about the role of its inhabitants in the events of the national and global scale.
Goodwood Museum and Gardens
Before the start of the Civil War, Florida was one of the most prosperous southern states, whose planters made their fortune growing cotton. Once the Goodwood plantations consisted of 1050 acres of cultivated land and their cost exceeded 30 thousand dollars. Now, it is a museum, with a vast adjoining area and a beautiful garden. This place is perfect for exploring not only the past of the capital of Florida, but also the history of the entire state.
The large mansion will immerse you in the atmosphere of the old American South, showing the beautifully preserved environment of the XVIII-XIX centuries. The magnificent well-kept garden is especially beautiful in spring when the trees are in bloom.
