Victor Garber is a Canadian stage, film and television actor. Among moviegoers, he is known as the performer of the role of Thomas Andrews in the drama "Titanic", as well as the role of Greg in the melodrama "Sleepless in Seattle".
Biography
The future actor was born in the Canadian city of London in 1949. His father is Joe Garber and his mother is actress and singer Hope Garber. In addition to Victor, the family had two more children - Nathan and Alicia.
The boy began his acting career at the age of 9, playing small roles in school theater productions. And in 1965, after graduating from high school, Victor entered the University of Toronto, where he studied theater arts.
Career in theater
In 1972 Victor Garber played Jesus Christ in the musical Godspell. It was this role that brought fame to the aspiring actor.
In 1985, he received a supporting role in Michael Frain's play "The Noise Behind the Wall", which was a great success and was staged many times around the world.
Since the early 90s, Victor Garber has been playing on Broadway. His most famous works during this period:
- play "DeadlyTrap", based on the book by playwright and writer Ira Levin, author of the mystical novel "Rosemary's Baby";
- musicals "Sweeney Todd", "Crazy Stage", "Killers".
And for his role in the musical "Damn Yankees" in 1994, actor Victor Garber was nominated for a Tony Award.
With the beginning of the 2000s, the actor paid less and less attention to the theater, deciding to focus on his film career.
Movie roles
Victor Garber first appeared on screen in 1973 in the film adaptation of the musical Godspell. In the 70s and 80s, the actor starred a lot, however, mostly he came across small roles in little-known films.
As already mentioned, the melodrama "Sleepless in Seattle" became the first successful film project with his participation. The main roles in this film were played by Hollywood stars Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. From critics, the film received mostly positive reviews and became a real box office hit, grossing $228 million on a modest budget of $30 million.
Sleepless in Seattle was followed by a role in the comedy The First Wives Club, in which the actor played alongside Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker. Garber landed the role of a successful producer who made a career out of his wife's connections and then left her for a young actress.
The most famous project in the filmography of Victor Garber was and remains the drama of James Cameron "Titanic", filmed in 1997. The picture was a resounding success and collected inat the box office an unheard-of amount at that time - more than 2 billion dollars. In 2001, Victor Garber, along with Reese Witherspoon, starred in Robert Luketic's comedy Legally Blonde. The actor played the role of Professor Kellahan, one of the teachers at Harvard.
In 2002, the actor played with Ben Kingsley in the fantasy melodrama "The Immortals", based on the teenage novel by Natalie Babbitt.
In 2015, Garber worked with Ben Kingsley again, this time on the sci-fi thriller Outside. Critics did not like the film very much, and despite the stellar cast, it nearly flopped at the box office.
One of the latest is the work of Garber in the action movie "Sicario" by Denis Villeneuve. During the filming of the film, the actor met such stars as Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin. The picture pleased the creators with box office receipts - the box office amounted to 85 million, which is almost 3 times the film's budget.
TV career
Since the beginning of the 80s, the actor has worked a lot on television, playing mostly episodic roles. He received his first leading role in 1985 in the comedy series "I Had Three Wives".
A year later, Garber appeared in one of the episodespopular thriller The Twilight Zone. In the same year, the actor played in the television fantasy film Roanoke.
Also, Victor Garber played a supporting role in the crime series Law & Order.
The most famous project in Garber's television filmography is the sitcom "Internet Therapy", on which he worked from 2011 to 2015.
Private life
Like his mother, Garber is passionate about music. In his youth, he even founded his own musical group.
Victor Garber says little about his personal life. But in 2012, he was the first to confess his homosexuality.
It is known that since 2000 he met with the artist and model Reiner Anderson. They got married in Canada in 2015 and now live in New York.
