Ancient cemeteries are available in many large cities of our country. Most often, these are memorial territories where mass graves have not been carried out for a long time. And only in rare cases are places in which people are buried for more than a century fully operational. This category also includes the Marine Cemetery in Vladivostok. It is one of the oldest in the city, burials are still held there today.
Historical background
The official date of foundation of the cemetery in the Pervomaisky district of Vladivostok is 1905. It was called the Fraternal Sea Cemetery at its opening. At first, sailors and military personnel who died in battles were buried here. At that time, the entire territory was divided into two sections: the garrison and the sea, and it was very easy to find the right burial. According to some reports, the first graves on the site of the modern Marine Cemetery appeared as early as 1902. At that time, employees of the lower ranks, as well as officers who died as a result of accidents and suicides, were buried on the new “non-prestigious” cemetery land. The Russo-Japanese War made adjustments to the development, it was then thatThe first mass graves and memorial burials appeared in the Marine.
Temple at the Sea Cemetery
Three years after the official opening, a "Temple-monument to sailors drowned and killed at sea" was erected on the territory of the cemetery. The author of the project was engineer Andrey Isanov. Archbishop Eusebius consecrated the temple in the name of the icon of the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow." The maritime cemetery was originally organized as a military one, but already in 1912 civilian burials were officially allowed here. Very soon, a female monastic community of Hodegetria of Smolensk was organized at the temple. The sisters lived right on the cemetery territory, in a specially built house, looked after the graves and buried the dead. In 1928, the Marine Cemetery was transferred to the municipal department of public utilities. At the same time, the monastic community was disbanded, the temple building and the community house were used for household needs for some time.
